France and Italy could be expelled from G8 for being too shit. UK to be world's 4th economy in front of Germany AND Japan.

>Britain will reach the "giddy" heights of the fourth largest economy in the world, leapfrogging Germany and Japan over the next two decades, new analysis shows.

>By contrast the stagnant Italian and French economies are forecast to fall down the economic league tables, which could hold geopolitical implications for the European nations.

>Afraid of losing the investment made by UNESCO, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the Brazilian president back then, developed a plan named Continued Progression. Such plan included several initiatives that would prevent the student from failing. It does not mean that students would have learned and for this reason, would be approved; yet, it meant that students would be approved, even if they had not learned anything at all.

>The immediate result was positive, at least to UNESCO’s eyes, as Brazil was presenting positive numbers regarding its educational system and for this reason, continued to receive the financial aid. However, the direct consequence of such initiative was that students were graduating from high school and were unable to write properly. They can identify what the combination of letters represent and therefore read a sentence, but without making any meaning out of it.

>Aware of the situation, both students and teachers got demotivated and their attempts to effectively improve education turned into indifference and disrespect: those who were good students would no longer work hard if they were to receive the same mark the bad students would receive; teachers would no longer be worried about effectively teaching if the evaluation methods were fake and their attributions as educators were diminished.

>What higher education has been doing is to try to cover-up a problem that is structural: 38% of their students can’t read or write properly and this is not a problem that should be solved by the university, but a problem that should have been treated when the student was still in the early stages of learning.

Now here comes the bomb:

>However, as Andrea Novais notes in a scathing report in The Brazil Business, the problem is primarily cultural: “almost 10% of the Brazilian population is completely illiterate … and 68% of the population is functionally illiterate. If we add these percentages, we will get to [a] stunning 78%, which corresponds to 150,053,666 Brazilians who are unable of [sic] reading a text like this one (in Portuguese, of course) and making any meaning out of it.

You are so wrong m8. Your mindset is that of declinism so you can't see what's happening in the present or the longer trends.

Firstly, English and British history shows that we have never accepted decline when it seemed obvious that we should. After losing our continental holdings to France and coming perilously close to getting crushed by Spain, England extended its power by founding colonies in the New World. This is how Spain also became powerful, except that when Britain lost its 13 Colonies, leaving it with hardly any overseas territories, it recovered from that loss and built a second Empire which so outclassed the first that it's the only one people remember today. Spain never recovered from the Napoleonic disaster which destroyed its power in the New World. Of course we lost the second empire as well, but Britain has begun expanding its power (economic, hard and soft), after the world had written us off - yet again. People never learn.

Obviously we are not an Empire. But you are deluded if you think Empire is the only form of power. Power politics changes as the world evolves and successful countries must adapt to new realities or fall behind.

The world has changed from the time of colonial empires. It is globalised, more connected, and becoming more multi-polar as historically powerful countries (China, India) reassert themselves after World Wars and other emerging powers try their luck. The ideas of free trade and capitalism are winning, thanks to the US. This is a good environment for the UK to flourish as it plays to our strengths. We are adapting as well. Just like we adapted from a protectionist mercantile economy to pioneer free trade, and used the industrial revolution to get ahead, today the UK focuses on the Knowledge Economy and services more than any other major advanced economy. We are investing more money in new forms of warfare like offensive cyber than most, and now we're pushing into the space sector.

The Americans tried to use diplomacy to transfer sovereignty of the Falklands to Argentina. Their Secretary of State Alexander Haig actually admitted it. I mean how pathetic can you get?

>>52688650
You seem to live in an alternative reality my friend. I guess in your universe, the US never asked Britain to attack Assad and Britain never refused? You're stupid even for /int/ standards. The UK's present involvement in Syria is against ISIS, not Assad (like the US originally wanted from us), and we're there because of the Paris attacks and a direct appeal from the French President to British MPs.

You're boasting about "subsiding" our military? You probably don't understand what that word means, otherwise I don't understand why you mentioned it.

By the way, you're laughing about the Falklands. Do you remember which country told us British victory in the Falklands was a "military impossibility"? It was the USA.

Wow you can't even read. The article doesn't say that. Try reading it again slowly.

Conflicts where Britain acted independently, such as the Falklands and more recently Sierra Leone, or as leaders of a coalition such as Libya, prove you wrong anyway.

In a debate, when someone starts to lie, it's the surest sign they have nothing. You are embarrassing yourself

How about homelessness and child poverty then(The latter of which the Tories changed the definition of in an effort to try and hide the real number)

http://www.greenbenchesuk.com/2012/12/graph-shows-homelessness-has-risen-31.html

http://www.cpag.org.uk/child-poverty-facts-and-figures
>>
>>52691195
>Child poverty reduced dramatically between 1998/9-2011/12 when 1.1 million children were lifted out of poverty. Since 2010, child poverty figures have flat-lined.

That's from your own link
>>
>>52691301
>http://www.cpag.org.uk/child-poverty-facts-and-figures

>As a direct result of tax and benefit decisions made since 2010, the Institute for Fiscal Studies project that the number of children in relative poverty will have risen from 3.6m to 4.3 million by 2020.

>Work does not provide a guaranteed route out of poverty in the UK. Two-thirds (64 per cent) of children growing up in poverty live in a family where at least one member works.

Did you stop reading there or was than an intentional nitpick? Tell me why child poverty is growing despite our apparently great GDP?

>the Institute for Fiscal Studies project that the number of children in relative poverty will have risen from 3.6m to 4.3 million by 2020.
That's an ABSOLUTE increase. The UK population will also increase over the decade. You should be looking at poverty as a percentage of the changing population

Plus, "relative poverty" is a British definition which doesn't deserve to be called "poverty", it's something like being on 60% of the median wage, not dying in the streets

It's almost like we've got food banks to prevent that, it's blatantly obvious "relative poverty" is still not enough to allow people to purchase all the food they require.

It's only going to get worse as well because the Tories are quite simply hiding unemployment statistics.

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/feb/22/youth-unemployment-jobless-figure

http://www.scriptonitedaily.com/2013/08/06/1-million-jobless-left-out-of-uk-govt-unemployment-figures/

I reckon we'll be on Spain's level before too long.
