It's a bit personal to take your shoes off. It's like taking your belt off. I don't know, it's kind of hard to explain.
But hell, not everyone even wears shoes in the home. My mom absolutely refuses to let people walk around the house with shoes on because they'll scrape the floors or whatever.
Some people do, some people dont. Its a personal preference I guess. I wear shoes in my house bc the floor is dirty and I don't wanna get my feet dirty. But then again, the floors probably dirty from wearing shoes in the house. I live with other people tho, so I can't dictate them Into not wearing shoes just so I can have clean barefoot feet lol

I mean I know a belt can make you feel uncomfortable if you are fat and have a big belly but it is still strange to take your belt off while visiting someone.
It's only a norm at houses you're visiting rather than your own, though by consequence of wearing them at someone else's house, your shoes feel like a natural extension of your feet and you don't mind wearing them at your own home.
It's exactly like using a different case/honorific to address your family. No one will usually say anything but they'll scorn you mentally and give you an odd look.
Though, as you know, there are houses where you're told to leave your shoes off. It's dependent on house to house like dinnertime or bedtime.

Walking into someone's house and taking your shoes off when you're not all that familiar with the person is getting a little too comfortable than is socially acceptable. The shoes for us are a mix between belts and overcoats. Not too personal where we eyeball them for doing so. But it's not expected like taking off a coat once you get in.

I don't sit around watching TV in my shoes, but if I'm going in and out of the house doing something I'll wear my shoes, usually some flip flops if I'm going in my backyard then inside then back out again. It's a pain in the ass to take your shoes off 5 times if you're going in and out for whatever reason.
