>What’s the most surprising thing that could come out of the current economic upturn? A rapid revival in northern manufacturing? The City really getting behind small British businesses? Ed Balls admitting higher public spending wasn’t always the best way to promote growth? Any of these eventualities would be fairly amazing. But the biggest surprise would perhaps be this: a gradual realisation that the UK is on track to become the largest economy in Europe.
>In the 19th century, at the height of the industrial revolution, the UK outproduced all of its European competitors. It steadily lost that position, however, ceding industrial leadership to the Germans and the French. In the next couple of decades that pattern will start to reverse. As the recovery gathers steam, we are likely to out-perform the rest of Europe. And that will change the way this country is perceived, both by global businesses and by investors.

Why on Earth would you use nominal to measure Germany's size relative to your's?
The Germans PPP is much higher, though I think the true weight lies in between nominal and PPP.
Just a few years ago their nominal was larger than their PPP, but QE changed that.

Anyway, TE predicted China would be the largest last year in 2021, and they say they are sticking by that prediction this year.
They argue that the Yuan should be stronger than it is now, while the IMF disagrees. I think TE is right.
>>52621000
Yes I recognise you. I am partial to playing up the BIDF, it's fun if only because of the hostile environment here.
Renminbi should be stronger yeah. It's difficult to predict when China will be largest. I think they will slow for a few years, maybe as low as 4% if the government stays hands off, and then rebound to a new normal that is more consumption-led. China is alright in the medium term however there surely must be some short term pain in store.
The funny thing is that Germany's currency should also be stronger. In theory that means their "real" nominal GDP should be higher... but a stronger currency would negatively affect GDP growth as Germany relies on exports, so there you go

I'm enjoying my Christmas eve currently by playing Skyrim and shitposting on 4chan. The semester just finished so there's not much else to do but let my brain rebuild.
Yeah I personally blame the dollar being overvalued.
The commodity crash and dollar rise were a double whammy for the emerging market and now we are seeing a steady creep towards a 97' scenario again.
But can you believe the dollar is up 25% against other major currencies even though we finally after 7 years raised interest rates by 25 basis points? They seriously are trying to price in the future and it's killing our manufacturing (decreased the most over Q4 since 2011 and has been negative since July).
I got off track. I see China being top dog nominally by mid 2020's even if they have an even greater economic slowdown. Their 7% growth this year added more to the world economy than the 14% growth in 2007.
So even with growth headed to 5-6% average to finish out the decade (poor Xi) I expect China to be much closer to taking the mantle of economic superpower in the next decade.
The one thing China should not do, is another 2008-2010 government debt stimulus. But what China does do well is stimulate. So a moderate increase in central government spending over the next five years would be intelligent to keep people from thinking a crash is imminent.
Merry Christmas and keep the BIDF going. I love it.
>>52613731
Unfortunately true, high GDP doesn't mean shit when half your population is non-white and ethnic Brits become an endangered species.
>>52621381
TE has been saying that emerging markets are currently in a better position than the 90s because they have more reserves and they're less reliant on dollar-denominated debt. It could still be bad, just not as bad as before. Brazil doesn't look pretty though.
Anyway it's approaching my bed time, Merry Christmas m8
