In the 16th and 15th centuries the most successful countries in Europe were Spain and Portugal. After the Reformation, power shifted to The Netherlands, France and later England especially after the Napoleonic Wars. France was a "Catholic country" up until the revolution, and still is culturally Catholic. It's also one of the most successful countries in Europe. It's nothing to do with the specific branch of Christianity people followed.
