I would say Apulia. Less mafia but still good places, sun, beaches. There are better places in South Italy, but there are more problems, maybe.
North italy maybe is better because you're australian and you would be more " understood ", whereas in the south it's probable to see people mocking you.

I think I liked northern italy more
is the mafia thing real?
I mean I know they have a lot of sway, but I figured the media exaggerated it

It's not as in the 90s, but it's there and even if not as strong as before it's annoying. In sicily for example there's more generic criminality desu. Mafia is strong in Calabria (ndrangheta) and Campania (camorra).
everyone can be italian
>>52591974
but I mean what do they do?
the mafia here just drink beer, sell drugs and ride around on choppers
do they terrorize the people, or just keep to themselves?

They are more " modern ", if you know what i mean. They obviously don't frighten publically people, they work more behind. There are rural zones in italy, however, in which there is still a sort of tradition, with sort of rituals and stuff, but it's really irrilevant. They work also more in the north i would say, even in other countries (for example Switzerland).
