You are now realizing that america has 9 regular aircraft carriers in addition to its super carriers.

They are the same displacement as ww2 carriers, and operate helicopters and VTOL airplanes.

We call them amphibious assault ships to not make other nations feel bad. We have 12 super carriers. Saying we have 12 carriers is enough, we dont have to rub it in by saying we have 21 :^) (they dont have ramps either)

>>
>>52437384
Why don't they have ramps since they are using the same VSTOL aircraft as us?

Also, congratulations on achieving vertical take-off and landing only fifty years after we did it. I'm proud of you, son.
>>
>>52437496
ramp carriers exist so they can launch planes with out the use of a catapult.

The reason to not have a catapult in your carrier are numerous, its all around more expensive to operate catapults on your carrier. First of all, you need lots of steam. US supercarriers use their nuclear reactors to generate that. These english ships run on diesel or something (i hope its not gas turbine, that would be stupidly expensive, its gas turbine isnt it?.. yep, just checked, its gas turbine. lol). Secondly, catapults take up more space, meaning you need bigger ships, meaning you need even more power to move them around. Lastly, catapults are tricky, the US has a lot of experience with them, anyone else would probably just blow their ship up somehow (good luck china :^) )

The disadvantage of NOT having catapults though, are also numerous. Catapults let you be much more flexible with what kind of planes you can launch. You can launch heavier planes, which means more powerful strike loadouts, or big cargo planes or more heavy utility craft. Basically, if you have serious logistical heavy lifting to worry about as well as just launching combat planes, the ability to use steam to push a big fat plane full of stuff off your deck and not have it crash is pretty handy. Ramp carriers are much more restricted. Which is fine if your carrier is actually just a dps add-on for some combined theoretical NATO fleet, but shit if you are actually wanting to go do empire stuff around the planet.

>>
>>52437731
we don't have ramps because we're not poor and we can afford slingshots

soon we're going to launch planes electromagnetically
>>
>>52437731
You landed the first plane on a ship, proving it could be done.
You then landed the first jet powered plane on a carrier, proving it could be done.
You also invented the system that pilots use to line up their approach on a carrier

So why dont you have any carriers worth a damn?
>>
>>52437825

>Bringing reasonableness and genuine knowledge into a shitpost thread

That's not how things are done here, chap.
>>
>>52437964
Bit harsh, m8. They'll still be the most effective carriers outside the USN. They were going to have cats and traps originally and launch proper planes instead of this VSTOL nonsense. That was changed for some reason, think our ecoomy tanked or something. Anyway blame your Marines - they insisted on the jump-jet version being developed for some reason.
>>
>>52437731
And as for no ramps. I dont really know. Probably just a stylistic thing. Then again they are not meant to fill the role of a pure aircraft carrier anyway, they are amphibious assault ships because they carry landing craft for putting fodder on beaches. They then act as a close airbase to support with attack helicopters and vtol, what this means is that the planes probably need to carry less fuel, so maybe they can get away with no ramp.

I honestly dont know a whole lot about them. I just know that their displacement is more than an essex class carrier, which was pretty big. Only the midway class out-displaced them.

So for all intents and purposes they are fleet carriers. I was surprised when i learned of these things.

Japan also has its 'helicopter destroyers', They are basically aircraft carriers themselves, and easily in line with some of the lighter ww2 aircraft carriers displacement wise
>>
Daily reminder that ramp means disaster in Dutch.
>>
>>52437731
>>52438353
>>52437825

The US Marines don't use ramps so they can eek out a few meters extra deck space as far as I know. That's the only real reason not to use a ramp for non CATOBAR aircraft like the F-35B and a pretty dumb one considering a ramp allows for a greater weapon and fuel load.

QE is designed to have the space for a catapult system.

Dude, the bongs invented the steam catapult (along with angled flight decks)
>>

This sounds like a horribly designed ship then.

"lets design a catapult carrier, then not install it, and glue a ramp on the front"

Moreover, since they dont have a reactor, they arent ever going to be able to use an electric catapult, which means they are going to need heat for a steam one, which means boilers, when they use a gas turbine engine.. those get hot but probably not hot enough

American amphibious assault ships don't have ramps because it reduces the amount of deck space usable by helicopters. fixed-wing operations are a secondary concern.
>>

>not many countries are being invaded though

Not many US allies you mean. Plenty of wars going on in places we dont protect.
Just not the first world, or the ex-second world (since russia is still pretty strong, a bunch of rusty t34s still beats a bunch of nothing)

The peace we enjoy is because its impossible to make war on us, or anywhere in our remote vicinity, which happens to be everywhere, since we have carriers.

Dont think humans suddenly got more civilized in the last 60 years.

Carriers are very logistically important. Not only can they act as mobile airbases, but their carrier groups refuel and resupply from the carrier, eliminating the need to lean heavily on auxiliaries.

They arent 'just' for launching attack craft to go attack something.

They also fill the diplomatic hole left by the battleships.

At what point ever have the Chinese, in all of the history of every Chinese state, ever threatened to get close to anything or anyone that wasn't like right on their doorstep?

Furthermore; they could be armed with equipment a century ahead of the US, and twice as much of it, and they'd still lose if they had to fight anywhere farther afield than North Korea; because in all of China there are a total of 10 people who have any sense of direction.

I don't even want to guess what we could do nowadays if we had a wartime economy.

>$22.5 billion program cost (FY15)
>$3.96B/unit (FY15 ex R&D)

European military weakness was an intentional US aim after WWII (to prevent future European wars). Ironically, the British navy is one of the few institutions that wasn't constrained after the war. That is why the UK was able to ramp up militarization of their navy.
