This I can attest, being a sinologist PhD.

China's military professionals talk about the "duel of the century" against the USA, and completely disregard Japan as being merely a road-bump or a "dependent middle power" that is basically an extension of the USA:

Read Col. Liu Mingfu's bestselling book "China’s Dream: Major Power Thinking and Strategic Posture in a Post-American Era", which completely ignores Japan, but sees the USA as being the geostrategic enemy #1 for China to overcome.

China's economy used to depend on investments, infrastructure and also real estates, but that has been over since 2012. What I do see now is a shift to more consumption led growth to make up for the weakness in manufacturing. This does indeed work, as the GDP measure can attest, where a large portion is already based on services (the largest portion, 46% percent to be exact). Working age population might not be such a big deal, since China's strongly moving to robotics in the manufacturing sector.

The current economic reform will be painful on the short-term, though, as I would expect the restructuring would cause unemployment in the short term, but this isnt something that will destabilize the country (one could remember Zhu Rongji's economic reforms in the 90s, that caused the total implosion of many big Mao-era SOEs), as new industries and the growing consumption led growth would be able to absorb many of them in the service-sectror.

Source:

http://www.economist.com/news/finance-and-economics/21667927-chinas-consumption-boom-not-enough-succour-world-economy-doughty-not

And interestingly, while China's manufacturing weakens in the low-tech sector, their high-tech sector is growing, even overtaking Japan:

The PRC actually aims to finlandize Japan, if anything. At most, they would strike the Nansei island radar network of the 1st island chain to get their ballistic missiles through the WestPac into Guam and Hawaii and USN carrier groups, but I havent read anything about war-plans against Japan proper.

China sees Japan as a dependent nation of the US that can be coopted and even allied with, when the US hegemony in Asia falls. As Japan always will depend on sea-borne imports of natural resorces much more than China (who has Russia as their secured backyard), Japan can be negotiated with.

The USA is the greatest geopolitical foe in Chinese point of view, as the US, in their eyes, disrespects China's security interests by meddling in their neighborhood, despite having an entire continent of their own.

As said, a neutralized and finlandized Japan is something that is desirable in the PRC's eyes.

Would you have any ideas on why China is so heavily investing in Africa? 60 billions dollars seems a ridiculous amount of money given the recent economic woes. What are they hoping to get out of their end of the deal?
Some increased presence in overseas countries? Xi doesn't seem like the type of give away money for charity.

>You know, technical innovation can occur only when they are allowed the freedom.

This is factually wrong tho. Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and the Chinese empire were very innovative for their times. And dont forget how China's first nobel prize in medizine that they received this year was for an anti-malaria-drug that was made on the order of Mao Zedong during cultural revolution to aid the North Vietnamese and Vietcong back then during the war.

Innovation isnt dependent on ideology or political system. This is a fallacy spread by the West during Cold War to declare their geopolitical foes as subhumans. This is propaganda nothing more.

Innovation is need-based. If there's a problem that needs adressing, and there arent existing solutions that can be replicated and copied, human societies tend to natuarlly innovate. Chinese nowadays innovate everyday - how to get around the internet censorship, for example. This is an evidence of innovation driven by needs. The only thing a political system has in terms of innovation is its institutional flexibility to detect innovation and to invest in it, instead of stiffling it with regulations. But this isnt a problem China has right now, but it is rather that they need to first catch up to the cutting edge via copying and replcation of foreign solutions, until they reach a state where they are forced to innovate to solve problems that noone else has solutions for.

In terms of space exploration and search for extraterrestial life, China's actually already on the cutting edge. The largest space-telescope in the world with 500m diameter will be completed in 2016, putting them at the boundary of this resarch field. And this is something that is entirely not dependent on political system at all.

Africa is pretty much terra nullis for China in terms of geopolitical needs. After decades of neglect by the West after the cold war, Africa is pretty much 'free' in terms of any competing interests that the Chinese cannot off-set by investments.

China's involvement is driven by two factors:
1. Resources and Commodities.
2. Investment and shuffling domestic industrial overcapacities.

Both can be seen right now, as China is importing raw materials and even food from Africa through Chinese owned farms, while investing heavily in infrastructure, so that Chinese low-end manufacturers can move out of China and set shop in Africa.
While a lot sounds like neo-colonialist schemes, it is indeed a different picture on the ground, as China's actually offering African countries a lot of investments and development in a way that actually isnt politically dependent. If anything, China's developmental model is now copied by many African nations to develop themselves.

A very unfamous old Chinese book among Chinese is kinda popular in Japan.

There's not much to discuss. China is worse for living but they are catching up fast. They are a rising great power with many problems with pollution, corruption, and brain drain.
But the reports of his demise are greatly exaggerated.
Japan is nicer for living. People are kind, yet cold. Work is hard and studying harder. It's stereotypically East Asian. At the same time they are a falling great power that has a revisionist prime minister who thinks he can change the course. Like Russia. Finally, Japan has taken care of its suicide problem compared to 2000-2005, but that might just be because people have accepted a harder life.
http://www.economist.com/blogs/banyan/2014/03/japans-demography

Western media wants Japan to open the floodgates to immigration like Germany. Abe stands firm against it. Japan is accepting its decline as Japanese, not as some multicultural behemoth. I agree.

This is the exact same thing as we did in a lot of colonies such as for example the princeley states which were independent yet still recieved investment, and this investment was much better than chinas current policy of taking all of the resources in exchange for a few measly buildings and a few trained black guys. They are just controlling the countries through the economy rather than by force; it is not neo-colonialism it is just old fashioned colonialism.

Commodities falling helps China in net. Most of the fall was because China pulled the bottom support out on the market though.

Throughout 2012-early this year China was extremely tight monetarily to try fixing a debt bubble. It worked, but it also led to the relative slowdown in the world economy. That, and China's demand to shut down it's worst polluters has killed the commodity market.

World trade value and volume is officially down on the year. The first time since 2009.

China is fine, but their investments in Africa and other commodity nations will be slowed down. As you can see the money flow is shifting somewhat towards developed nations because the rich are afraid of the corruption crackdown and manufacturing slowdown.

China under Xi is an amazing place to watch change.

I wouldn't say so. The manufacturing slowdown highlights a major problem inside the Chinese economy.
Their economy relies mainly on manufacturing and construction sector and their very high growth relies on that.
But they have hit a point in which they try to sustain such a growth by building/producing based on non existent demand.
>>
>>52423604

>>
>>52423604
You get your opinions from CNN?

That shit is way overblown and tons of Chinese like systems like it with Alibaba. A very similar system was actually used in the US with the NSA. And something similar is used by our banks.

If you haven't been to Weibo, you'll notice everything short of open defiance is allowed.
>>
>>52424117
I don't understand what you are trying to say.

EVERYONE knew China would slowdown. Everyone knew it would switch from manufacturing to services. The people who caused the commodity collapse are the Producers continuing to produce more and more for non-existent demand.

China in 2012 grew 7.8%. China in 2015 has grown 7%.
Yet 12 billion barrels of oil were produced in 2012, compared to 20 billion in 2015. It's very similar for other commodities. The producers caused the price crash.

China's economy is 35% manufacturing. Not all that different from Japan in 1980.
Manufacturing will go into recession and the money will flow to services in China.
The only problem is that services don't help the world grow nearly as much as infastructure and manufacturing. Hence the even greater price collapse in commodities since July.

China is fine. I can give you a link to the Chief Economist of East Asia in the IMF.

>Qin
A powerful red-haired Caucasoid from the Western frontier uses Western inventions such as the chariot to invade the East and conquers all the yellow-skinned submissive Mongoloids and rules over them. He institutes strict laws and standards throughout his empire to dominate and control his subjects and this leads to the Chinese cultural identity.

>Han
Chinese Mongoloid peasants rebel and oust their Caucasoid masters and make a peasant their supreme emperor. Thanks to all the technology and culture brought to them by their Western conquerors, the Chinese experience a golden age.

>3 Kingdoms
Constant warfare between a bunch of peasants who want to be emperor. Someone writes a bullshit novel about them 1000 years later making them into superheroes.

>Sui then Tang
A northern Turkic people called the Xianbei conquer all of China. Tang is another golden age where Western culture is prevalent. For instance, the beauty standard is imported from Caucasoid Turkic northerners and fat lewd chicks are seen as the ultimate sex symbol.

>Liao then Jin
Northern steppe warriors invade and conquer half of China and enslave the Chinese population.

>Song
The remaining southern half of China.

>Yuan
Founded by Genghis Khan (who had red hair according to historical documents) and his Mongolian descendants. They first conquer Jin, which is already foreign-occupied, and then they conquer Song and rape all the Chinese women. Chinese are relegated to the lowest social class in the multi-ethnic Yuan empire.

>Ming
Chinese peasants rebel and oust the Mongols. They once again make a peasant their supreme emperor.

>Qing
Northern steppe warriors called the Manchu invade and conquer all of China and subjugate the entire population. They force all Chinese men to shave half their head and massacre 30 million Chinese.

>Modern
Japan defeats Qing in a war and liberates the Chinese from 300 years of Manchu domination. Later, Japan weakens the KMT, and Communist peasants take over China.

>the Producers
And who are they? Aren't they the ones funding the central party right now? Would they allow their profitable industries to stop functioning by having a sectoral shift?
> The money will flow to services in China.
But China is not a mass consumer society yet, only 120 million Chinese can be considered middle class. There is no way they can achieve the same level of growth with this.

Please do so.

The producers of commodities (raw materials used in finished products) are Russia, brazil, south africa, malaysia, africa, middle-east, and parts of Canada and Australia.
China consumes commodities.

The poor consume more than the rich. Starting at a low base also helps growth. 1+1=100% growth.

'Soviet union,imperial Japan,nazi germany,imperial china '
However, neither of them survived for only 100years.though last one may be exception,it is difficult to call it innovative.innovation in imperial china was formed in its too long history. So it couldn't beat westerners in 1850s.
