Here in Croatia catholicism is strongly tied to our sense of nationality. Lots of people say they are Catholic, will Christen their babbies and will get married in the church and a priest is pretty much mandatory at funerals etc etc but really most people don't go to church or read the bible or really think that much about religion.

It's definitely much different here. The catholic church has been seen as a oppressive institution during our history. We were also kind of like the original protestants (Hussites), but the recatolization process after 1620 wiped that out. Then communism happened and I guess people saw no reason to return to the church like in other ex-commie countries. It's not tied to our nationalism at all, in fact personally think it is opposed to it. But some right wing assholes are trying to bring it back and lately the whole WE WUZ CRUSADERS AND SHIET mentality is making a slight comeback due to the immense hate against muslims, still nothing too serious though.
