The alphabet wasn't bad I just transcribed names of dozens of Russian cities.
Even spelling words out by sound is almost easier than English for me

Just ask a foreigner to say something like pибa, or бить. It will sound like pыбa and быть, proving that they can pronounce Ы with no training.

It’s crazy to think that Ь makes a sound. Every consonant is changed by Ь in its own way, it’s literally a second complete set of consonants: Pь, Бь, Фь, Кь and all the rest.

CAn anyone give some info on the Duolingo Russian course? I was thinking of starting it just for fun. I'm nearly done with the German one, and it was a nice intro to the language with not as much grammar as I was expecting from a language learning source.

for more grammar use Assimil and Michel Thomas, Memrise to improve vocabulary
once you’ve finished those download films and video games in German, you need native material to really get the language

grammar books aren’t very good imo, they're designed to be used in a classroom, Michel Thomas and Assimil teach it naturally and you don't need to read or go to a class
I've gotten very comfortable with Spanish and decent at Portuguese just with Duolingo, scavenging around for native materials, and then eventually having conversations with natives.
