Let's discuss East Asian culture, language and history together.

First for traditional Chinese
2nd for future expat.

>>51981740
I guess that's a popular choice. Lots of jobs as well.
I suppose your choice of university depends on the results of those public exams?
>>51982281
no Rising Sun is the best flag
>>51982598
It's pretty badass. A pity many people associate it with war crimes.
>>51982287
Kind of, but not quite. Engineering is not as prestigious a degree in HK as compared to the US so it's rather easy to get in. However the Chinese Language exam is notoriously harsh and it's likely I won't pass at all, making it impossible to enter any university. So I'll either get in my first choice or be forced to go overseas.
Besides the US has a better tech industry and twice the starting income, so I'm going there if they accept me.
>>51982281

What makes it so hard? Are you supposed to know a lot of classical literature by heart? Do many people fail it?
The US is expensive if you don't get a scholarship, so you better aim for that. If you don't get into one of the more prestigious universities you might be stuck with a large debt and not much to show for it.
>>51982897
Nice, Mongolia came! Tell us about Mongolia. How many horses do you have?
Do you like anime?

Do you like living in Mongolia? What kind of environment do you live in? Are you an actual Mongolian?
>>51983450
Yeah. I've lived here a long time.
I live in a city, but not the capital.
I'm not ethnic Mongolian, no.
>>51983249
Thanks and I dislike anime too
>>51981867
Very rich, distinctive and interesting.
Too bad it'sbeing ruined by autist anime-watching neckbeards.

Nice.

Is that why you don't own a horse?
>>51984130
Nope. Most people don't.
Hell, over half the population lives in the capital urban environment.

I thought so.
You never hear about Mongolia though. Does anything exciting happen there?

Totally quiet and peaceful. Not a bad place to be.
>>51984580
Do mongolians all use cyrillic now, or is there still a place for the traditionnal script ?
>>51984693
Everyone uses Cyrillic, but official government documents are increasingly using both. I think the goal is to transition in the future.
>>51984480
how do Japanese people see the flag? Is it wrong to wave the flag, or do only conservatives still use it or something like that?
>>51984751
That's nice. I'm not reactionnary, but I think it's good not to forget your traditionnal roots, especially now that's people are increasingly living in urban environement ... but I guess they can't stay nomads until the end of time.

>>51988178
I can hold a conversation and I think I can be understood without too much trouble, even though I still have to speak rather slowly. Understanding is fine up until the point they become too excited and forget I'm far from being fluent.
I'll probably have a tough couple of months before I can start picking up the pace. What scares me the most is my lack of vocabuary, I hope I'll be able to pick that up as well.
>>51988198
>the elites are gods and everyone else is a slave
Completely unrelated. Plus you'll find that the elites don't feel the freedom of power but instead the burden of responsibility, even if it is only the responsibility of maintaining the position they have become dependant on.

>>51989721
You're Vietnamese? I would like to hear what most Vietnamese think about French colonization. Do you have some stories about colonial times?
>>51991242
And most importantly: do they like or hate French people?
>>51991183
I'll like to work on the perception of the body in chinese contemporary society, especially trough body modifications, like tattoos, piercings and martial arts ... also to see how much this perception is infuenced by classical beliefs, especially taoism and confucianism.
That's my objectives, but I don't know if I'll be able to carry the project, I might have to pick something else if I want to get a work contract with a research lab.
>>51991498
Sounds interesting. I wonder how much those Taoist and Confucian beliefs still influence this perception, and if it influences their actual behaviour a lot.
Do you have some kind of broader field of interest within your study? A friend of mine is doing Japanese studies but with more of a focus towards politics and diplomacy. Do you think those fields generally make for more looked after research?
>>51982166
What is the point of all this number grafitis accross China?
>>51991242
>>51991320
the french didnt do much beside resource extraction, unlike the Brit who does some construction
most people were born after the Vietnam war, they dont have any recollection of the french of the american so they don't have opinion. They know well that China is the main enemy and they are perfectly fine with allying with western country
French language has seen a resurgent after the French pushed some sort of student exchange program and such. Same with the US although that come from companies, not politics. I have friends who go to a school in New York and such
the French brought their cuisine over and we mix it up with our ingredients. We also use your cooking utensils
As for the story time in the colonial time to be honest the most interesting story came from country like Laos and Cambodia because their culture are even weirder than the Vietnamese (Read up the War of the Insane wikipage)
I could see if my relatives have any stories
for now I can post picts of vietnamese in world war 1
>>51991931
Most things related to cinema would do, as well as subjects like extremism, national indentity and nationalism, anything society-related, really, but I don't think there's a lot of thing I'd find boring when it comes to the chinese world.
>A friend of mine is doing Japanese studies but with more of a focus towards politics and diplomacy. Do you think those fields generally make for more looked after research?
I think it all depends of what your final goal is. If you want to work in diplomacy, or as an advisor of some sorts, yes.
Generally speaking anyway, politics, diplomacy and buisness are always more looked, because they can be used in a great variety of domains, but I think focusing towards society isn't cutting me from other fields, as it is always more or less connected to everything.

There's a statute in france commemorating the Indochinese troops somewhere
>>51992349
Do you think the romanization of Vietnamese was a good idea ? Not the same guy btw.
>>51992468
the Romanization of Vietnam lead to people using its modern day alphabet which is a good thing because the Chinese Scripts was a pain in the ass to learn. The new food and technology were useful.
Vietnam is probably one of the few countries that could be romanize and not lost its old culture completely. After various Chinese dominations they really want to keep their culture alive while getting new technology
Also fun fact, when the Roman Empire trade with the Han dynasty they go through Vietnam, through the sea route
>Sometime long ago, there is probably a Vietnamese merchant who want to Romanize the country and invade China
>Vietnamese troops in pratetorian guard armor invading China
>>51992652
I see, interesting. Well, I'm glad it didn't erase old traditional culture.
>>51992380
>subjects like extremism, national indentity and nationalism
Those are interesting subjects. How about the changes in self-perceived national identity of Chinese living abroad for an extended period of time? Or in the second generation of Chinese immigrants in western societies? Those are probably way too broad subjects though.
>>51992468
I'd guess romanization causes increased literacy, but also made many of their old texts unreadable to Vietnamese. Generally 漢字 are faster to read but harder to write and learn.
>>51992916
the tragic things is now with the influx of koreans music and the dying of the Vietnamese music industry mean that kids these days are a bunch of pansy pro korean with no love for the country. Why are people so pro-Korean and pro-Japanese? Is this just because of k-pop and anime, or do they also look up to them as successful Asian societies?
>>51993287
because gommunism m8
>>51993328
maybe a bit of both
in the early 2000 most of tv shows where chinese Tv shows
since 2007 they started showing korean drama and people love it. Plus the arrival of korean MMO and shit, made people insterted in Korean culture. They even adopt the study ethic of going to two schools in one day and crap.
I went through that back in Vietnam, it was hell
Glad im in american college now, and it wasn't worth the effort
>>51992983
Well, the PRC went for a simplification instead of a romanization and it did boost the litteracy. Both choices can be discussed, but I think all it matters is that it actually has an effect without sacrificing too much. Chinese people can still read traditionnal, so pretty much nothing was lost.
>How about the changes in self-perceived national identity of Chinese living abroad for an extended period of time? Or in the second generation of Chinese immigrants in western societies?
Both are interesting subjects, but I'm not really interested in working on diaspora, besides it's a rather popular subject and it's been treated in many ways already. Still, it's interesting and there's a lot to say about it.
>>51993100
Didn't know that ... how young is the population ?
>>51993479
>They even adopt the study ethic of going to two schools in one day and crap.
I always wonder why they do that. It just seems like the extra time spent in school does not weigh against the loss of the time young people need to rest or do stuff with their friends in their free time.
Does Vietnam actually have some universities with terribly hard entrance exams, or is this time spent in evening school completely wasted for Vietnamese?
>>51993647
http://www.prb.org/Publications/Articles/2003/AnOverviewofPopulationandDevelopmentinVietnam.aspx
most people were born after the war because there is finally peace after decades of conflict. In 1992 after Vietnam issued a bunch of reforms call "Đổ Mới" meaning modernize, Vietnam rejoined the world and start slowing down the population because that's just what you do when the world call you a "developing country"
>>51993773
the state's university are very hard to get in
im not sure how accurate this is but probably 1 million people apply to these university per year and 1k get accepted. If you get in you get a full ride plus probably alot of connection, both in the workforce and in the government. It modeled like China where it tried to even out everyone so that even children from families who work in the government have to actually be smart to get in.
Otherwise you go to other college that are not 100% state sponsored but are not private college or for profit college either. It's not that expensive anyway.
The reason people study so much for these test is because there is one exam you take at the end of your senior year and depend on the score you will see which college will take you, even if you are not applying to state's school. It's like one for all SAT score
>>51995232
>there is one exam you take at the end of your senior year and depend on the score you will see which college will take you
Basically like most of Asia. The downside to this is that people will actually be studying for the test and not for the sake of gaining useful knowledge, and there are also people that don't do as well on tests as in research.
Here we separate people based on their intelligence before secondary education. This used to be in part some kind of IQ test an in part teacher's advice, but I hear they've removed the test lately.
The top 5 % smartest kids do VWO after which they can go to university. Medicine has another selection however, with generally around 6 times as many applicants for medical school as there are places. Because girls generally do better on tests, 2/3rd of our med students are now girls. Research is still dominated by men however.
>>51992349
If it wasn't for the Chinese Vietnam would be a French or American bottom bitch. Oh wait. Now it is.
>>51995668
>research is still dominated by men though
And they wonder why there is a wage gap across all societies despite how hard the government tries to change it.

for a country full of suicidal people wouldn't shutting down social sciences be a dumb things to do?
>>51996219
you just wish you were as useful as the Soviet Union
>>51996961
>for a country full of suicidal people wouldn't shutting down social sciences be a dumb things to do?
It's not really a country full of suicidal people, and social sciences wouldn't really help against that. I read somewhere lately that 80% of research in the social sciences isn't replicable, which basically means it's useless.
I think their reasoning is that many Japanese get a university education just because they think it is important to have one, instead of going to university to get a degree in something that they can use to contribute to society with. It's a waste for these people to spend both their personal and tax money on getting these degrees if there are too many people with them already.
>>51997260
hmm i thought they shut down the entire liberal art, not just social sciences and shit. as long as psychology is still in there then it should be good
is the anti liberal art meme came from /pol/ or /sci/ or something? i have friends in the liberal arts school who are pro guns and stuff. It's a hell of a misleading name
>>51998098
They're more like a meme in and of themselves. I'm not saying they're all completely useless, but I am saying that many people who just weren't made for university are forced to make shitty research so they can get their degree.
This doesn't mean that there can also be people who actually do good research in those fields, as I think the French sinologist will.

I'm sorry friend I'm just upset because moving to Japan is harder than I thought and I'm only allowed to stay for 1.5 years maximum, after that I'm not allowed back :(

What, why?

This

why?
Will there ever be true democracy in east asia? What went wrong? Do you think most east asians are like sheep that only cares about food and shelter and nothing else ?
>>52012884
I think generally Korean are way more obsessed with America than Japan.

Kinda ridiculous to make the test so hard. Is there a reason for that? Is it to stimulate people to go abroad?
>>52006542
Yeah, don't mind the 憤青 of course

There is a part 2?

I asked earlier on this forum why they weren't worn any more. I can quite understand why mainland doesn't have them, but people told me Taiwan is trying to emulate Japan too much to keep things like 漢服 alive.
>>52012992
kek, nice
We do care about Japan. Don't listen to that guy pls. For example, our politicians are such weeaboos.

There will never be true democracy anywhere on earth. In my opinion China is way too large a country to be ruled quite as democratically as most European countries, or else it might fall apart. Due to its size, it is really hard to have to compromise over every little issue in the country like we can afford in my little country.
East Asian philosophy is generally less individualistic and more aimed at fitting into society, but with societies as large as yours this is a good adjustment. If all Asians put themselves first like westerners do your cities would be complete chaos.

Kek, I did say I copied the post
>>52008690
that is a pretty shit national flag desu.
I'd offer up this slight modification of the presidential flag of the Chinese republic as a contendr.
>>52019168
go fuck yourself and marry a 2d moron

The flag should contain such complicated details. A good flag is supposed to be able to be drawn from memory.

*should not

look at tibet or mongolia's flag.
1. Your cunt.
2. In your cunt, when a child asks his/her parents "what happens to people when they die?", what do the parents usually say?
>>52020710
Yeah, Tibet's flag is not a good flag for a country. Mongolia is also in the danger zone.
>>52020780
They'd say you go to heaven. Not because they are Christian, but because it's a child asking.
>>52015277
I used to believe democracy was the solution to everything. I'm not so sure now that I know more about the system. Although China's system has its flaws, it is relatively meritocratic, and doesn't rely on popular opinion which is not always right.
>>52018866
I don't know why they make it so hard but they've been working on making it easier, or so I've been told.
Just found out that there are some people who are pushing to revive hanfu. I hope they succeed. I would like to have a national costume I can be proud of, like Japan and Worst Korea.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanfu_movement
>>52020937
many countries have their complex national emblems on their flags and are fine.
Mexico, portugal, serbia. etc
>>51982598
Nice flag.
It is widely used from Newspaper company to Marine Defense Army or on canned tuna.
>>52019811
there is no indie scene in korea
>>52021703
So what are those links then?
>>52021444
Yeah, it would be great to create more of a Chinese identity again.
Good thing they're making that test easier.
>>52021556
You could argue those flags could have been better too.
>>52022665
Portugal's flag would be better if instead of a shield it just had a yellow blob iin the middle?
>>52022997
You're saying it like that is the only alternative to a complicated emblem
>>52021692
I see the flag every summer because the national high school baseball tournament is sponsored by the newspaper company.

>1927: Natural Breast Movement
We need to revive this and save the world from fake boobs
>>52014929
>>52014989
I can only get a work holiday visa because of an agreement between Japan and Canada but you're only allowed 1 of those visas in your lifetime
I don't have a bachelor's degree so I can't get a regular work visa. I won't be banned from Japan or anything, it's just that I won't be allowed to live there anymore
>>52024193
kek, the original movement was against breast binding which is kind of the opposite of fake breasts, but it's similar in that people keep forgetting that natural is best. Confucius warned us for this in his 中庸.
>>52024317
You don't get to migrate to Japan?
>>52024317
Or you could get a bachelor's degree. Can't really blame them for keeping uneducated immigrants out.
>>52024481
not without a work or spouse visa, one requires a bachelor's and the other requires a wife
>>52024509
what's the point in getting one if the only job I'll ever be hired for in Japan is an English teacher
>>52024634
Time to get a spouse visa
>>52024634
>what's the point in getting one if the only job I'll ever be hired for in Japan is an English teacher
I really wouldn't want to work in Japan, and neither can I as a doctor. Japanese doctors work harder and earn a lot less than doctors here so I'd have to be mad.
I do get to go back there multiple times if I want to however.
Can't you stay there with a regular tourism visa for 3 months by the way? Isn't that long enough for you?
Else I hear there are usually jobs in business. You can become a salaryman. They need people with good control of English in their companies too anyway.
>>52024736
unless I find true love that would be dishonest, I don't know if I could treat a woman like that.
>>52024765
yeah that's what I figure, people with bachelor's or higher wouldn't want to be in a Japanese workplace anyways because they'll get treated better in the west. They don't even require a bachelor's in English or education, they'll accept anything for you to teach English. 3 months would be alright for a holiday, but I want to live in Japan not just visit it
>>52025072
So why not get a degree in Economics, Business, Management or even Communication? There are many companies that either merged with Japanese companies, or want to expand in the Japanese market. Most people in western countries now nothing of the Japanese language or culture and would rather stay home, so I'm sure there's a high demand for westerners willing to live there and helping the company with its internal communication.
>>52025339
I was thinking if it's necessary I'll go into IT, I hear working IT in Japan isn't crazy like some other positions are compared to the west
>>52008927
It has a black stripe as well. They stand for the ethnicities living in China. Educate yourself.
>>52025531
Sounds good. It's definitely a lot better than working as an English teacher.
