It's a social club for men that might involve getting hazed and will definitely involve being messed with, also don't jump into it without the means to pay for your frat dues. I cannot emphasize that enough, YOU WILL OWE MONEY and they use collection agencies if you don't pay (they keep that on the downlow until you're in though). Most of that will go to nationals (the frat HQ, fuck all nationals), the rest is pooled to throw parties and have events and shit.
I worked and went to school full time to pay for it, and living in the house was cheaper than dorms. I had a lot of fun and drank a lot, and met tons of people who I truly did not care for but were fun to party with, and made a handful of very good friends.
I don't regret the choice to join, but be warned that there's a lot of shit that comes with it. You have to follow extra rules (some mandated by the college), hazing varies wildly from none at all to "eat these two taco bell tacos and chug this warm beer and run two miles with your pledge brothers".
Also sorority girls are shallow as fuck, all of them. Don't bother dating or getting to know them, they're just around to have fun before they get married. That's why they joined a sorority, to find a husband after 4 years of partying.
