We should have fucking done it. In 1935, we should have declared war on Great Britain, immediately taken Halifax to cut off Canada's contact to the outside, and if that failed we would have poison gassed them and bombed the shit out of the city until the communication lines were unusable. We had plans on the books to split the country in half via capturing the railway hub in Winnipeg, grinding Canada's economy to a dead stop by capturing or blockading every major and secondary port in the country, seizing their nickel mines so that we could produce steel for our own war effort against them, taken over Niagara Falls so that we could cut off power to much of the country's population, and begun an invasion from Washington state to ensure that the west coast is also accounted for.
We had it all worked out, and Canada would have been utterly powerless to stop us. Canada, at most, would have stalled our advance until British reinforcements arrived, but Britain's war plan in the era called for simply letting Canada fall to American control.
The War Plan also called for fast-tracking Canada's statehood process to make sure that peace negotiations wouldn't call for releasing the country, nor Britain's then-former possessions in the Caribbean.
We could have gone into World War II as a nearly continent-sized war factory.
I'd bet you if the US consisted of modern-day US and Canada, Denmark might have been a tad more willing to take up our 1946 offer to buy Greenland for $100,000,000. If that happened, then imagine how the Cold War would have looked.
