Assuming you're a beginner, the books "Genki I and II". Also, "Japanese the Manga Way" is a good book you should pick up as well. That's pretty it as far as books for beginners. A lot of people use Tae Kim's guide but I'd skip it. You learn all you need to for basic level from Genki and Manga Way and Tae Kim isn't a native speaker..
Well, as you said beyond books, you really just need to expose yourself as much as possible to other shit. Songs, comics, go on Interpals and find a Japanese penpal, etc.
If you're intermediate or high I really think the book どんなとき、どう使う日本語表現文型辞典. It's a fantastic book of grammar an expressions covering basically any expression or grammar point you'd need to know for N5-N1. Complete with a brief explanation in English (and Korean and Chinese) and several example sentences for each point. The example sentences are not translated, so you should be intermediate at least, but all the kanji in the sentences have furigana.
I also recommend よく使う順漢字2200 for Kanji if you can get it. It lists all the joyo and then some in order of use, with example sentences for most of them and selected vocabulary using the Kanji. Fantastic book. Commit yourself to 5 new kanji a day initial exposure and review with Anki.
Unfortunately I got both of these books in Japan and idk how readily available they are outside of Japan. You could check Amazon or eBay.
