Let's take a trip to the magcal world of Toki Pona!
toki pona is a minimalist conlang with a vocabulary of around 120 words and roughly a dozen of grammar rules. It takes about an hour to start swearing and about a week to start swearing well in toki pona.
ITT, let's see if it is useable as a pidgin (one of the reasons it was invented for), excercise in semantical deconstruction (that's another reason) and translate boardspeak in toki pona!

I've heard of this language before and did some reading on it. I have never tried learning it, but perhaps in a few weeks I will start.
One thing I'm particularly interested in is the Sapir-Whorf Theory. For those who don't know about it, it's a linguistic theory that looks at the ability of language to change how we think. There are two forms, "strong" and "weak" theories. The weak theory states that language 'influences' how we think, the strong theory states that language 'dictates' how we think (meaning that if you speak Japanese, you can only comprehend 'Japanese' things.
To the speakers of Toki Pona, what do you think of this? Do you feel that when you think in Toki Pona that your thinking is controlled or hindered? Do you think it influences your ideas?
Also, when I start learning this, where is a good place to find you speakers to practice?

As myself, I say that tp a lil change my way of speaking russian, my native lang. (it turns to toki pona style sometimes, lol, and its for a month of talking), but... well, when try to think in toki pona, I still use russian or english, but nowadays i fluently speaking it :D

1) It's fun to play a game, it's kind of art

As a linguist, you'll have to realize that the layman's experience and definition of language is much broader than what your profession allows.
For example, linguists tend to eschew the importance of the written word when it comes to language. As a lover of postmodern literature and of visual/concrete poetry, I find this asinine.
How is this relevant to you questions? Allow me to explain.
Many fans of invented languages are interested in a foreign, artistic/artificial *mindset* or worldview.
In most cases of conversational spoken language, one speaks without thinking due to force of habit rather than intentional, conscious *expression*.
So, even if one can successfully-- and even fluently-- reproduce the sounds and grammar of the language, violating the aesthetic and philosophical spirit of the language means you aren't *truly* speaking it. You haven't internalized the worldview the creator intended (or unintentionally implied).
So, no; no language hinders or helps if you treat it as a mere interchangeable veil/gloss over nonverbal thoughts.
Can complicated and esoteric subjects like astrophysics be discussed in Toki Pona?
Perhaps. (Just as with any other language.)
However it would require long chains of contorted phrases which would quickly confuse even the most fluent reader/listener(s). And more importantly, it wouldn't be very Pona.

As far as I know, everyone that speaks it knows it as an L2. So if someone were to learn it as an L1 (native language), do you think it would then impact the ability to discuss quadratic formula?
Also, the author herself stated that it was designed to limit speech to the "simple life". That's why there's specific words which translate roughly to hunt/gather/forage

That depends on who and how the child is raised, doesn't it?
If the child is raised with the focus on simplicity and everyday pleasures so often mentioned about Toki Pona, then no.
If you wish to speak in long-winded phrases describing math, then probably yes.
Technically, you can describe everything in binary code but it isn't efficient.

Anyway. In that Russian thread of ours, we just recommend the guys to figure out the basics (which takes couple of hours) and start fooling around. Works great. We mostly exercise in offending each other's parents, have small talk and translating macros/pasta.

WHAT LANGUAGE IS THAT?!
Studying this language, I'm starting to grasp the nature of it. It's interesting, because out of the other languages I speak, it borrows many elements either from the grammar or lexicon.
.....I wouldn't mind living in a farm and speaking this language. Get back to basics.
