I just love how there's a piece of Canada that the USA-Canada border just slices off and it's part of the states for no real reason.

The border's complexity results from a number of equally complex medieval treaties, agreements, land-swaps and sales between the Lords of Breda and the Dukes of Brabant. Generally speaking, predominantly agricultural or built environments became constituents of Brabant, other parts devolved to Breda. These distributions were ratified and clarified as a part of the borderline settlements arrived at during the Treaty of Maastricht in 1843.

There's no boats.

A lot of rich foreigners who work in Vancouver live in Point Roberts. They don't live in Canada, so they don't have to pay as much in taxes. A lot of foreign hockey players do it.

Also fun fact:

Bouvet island is the most remote island on the Earth. It is uninhabited, and thus the closest human settlement is in Queen Maud Land in Antactica with its research stations. The closest permanent human settlement is Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, a small hamlet of about 240 people, in Tristan de Cunha. That, of course, makes the hamlet the most remote and isolated permanent human settlement on the planet.

Is anyone else really fucking fascinated by the most remote places on Earth? Tristan de Cunha, Easter Island, Pitcairn etc

We've had a long dispute over an area in the Barents Sea. Because of international laws it's considered international waters. However, different rules apply to the continental shelf underneath the seabed apparently. There might be large oil and gas reserves located here.

You can read more about it here:

I've seen a couple of documentaries and that's not the only reason. The land is dedicated to the Virgin Mother Mary and in respect to her no other women is allowed on the land. Very interesting history. Hitler had even become the protector of the island after the Patriarch appealed to him in order to save their monasteries and artifacts.
