We "won" in the sense that South Vietnam was defended as long as we had a troop presence there and never lost a battle to the Vietcong, but ultimately a defensive war is not a victory and as soon as we withdrew (due to the American public not wanting to put up with the cost of it), the VNCH collapsed.

But then we wouldn't have won either because the strategy was just to defend South Vietnam against endless attacks by Hanoi and eventually, the expense of it wasn't worth it. The biggest blunder of the war was that Johnson and McNamara ruled out a ground invasion of North Vietnam because they were terrified of another Chinese intervention ala 1950 (that was only 15 years earlier and still fresh in everyone's memory).

Part of the reason for antiwar sentiment in the US were closet leftists like Walter Cronkite who circulated the myth that we'd been defeated in the Tet Offensive when it was the opposite.
