I used to learn French but find it a really nitpicky and annoying language. Moved onto Spanish, I find it more fun and easier to find Speakers online. It is a global language and the spics are colonising the USA so their going to become relevant as time goes by

English is already so dominant as the lingua franca that if you already speak it, the point of learning another language would pretty much have to be for some specialized purpose. Like learning Swahili would be useful if you specifically would benefit from it in your job. If you're a bookworm and want to read books in their original languages, learning some other European language would be best. Etc etc.

The character system is hell. It'd be easier if you could get by using pinyin, but the characters are still the dominant way its written by far. I took a few years of Mandarin in high school, I would not continue learning it unless I knew I was going to do something with it. I'd learn Korean over Chinese if I was just doing it for fun. Korean is still relatively hard to learn I've heard, but at least the script is easier compared to Chinese characters.
