I used to learn French but find it a really nitpicky and annoying language. Moved onto Spanish, I find it more fun and easier to find Speakers online. It is a global language and the spics are colonising the USA so their going to become relevant as time goes by

Spanish is useful for people in construction or food service
German is useful for people who wish to manufacture durable goods
Every other language is mostly only useful if you intend to go where it is spoken and interact with people who are not important enough to have to learn English.

English is already so dominant as the lingua franca that if you already speak it, the point of learning another language would pretty much have to be for some specialized purpose. Like learning Swahili would be useful if you specifically would benefit from it in your job. If you're a bookworm and want to read books in their original languages, learning some other European language would be best. Etc etc.
>>
>>51725836
this
>>
>>51725836
Not really, English is merely spoken by normal people in many regions, e.g a big part of asia.

>for fun
The character system is hell. It'd be easier if you could get by using pinyin, but the characters are still the dominant way its written by far. I took a few years of Mandarin in high school, I would not continue learning it unless I knew I was going to do something with it. I'd learn Korean over Chinese if I was just doing it for fun. Korean is still relatively hard to learn I've heard, but at least the script is easier compared to Chinese characters.
>>
>>51726027
>learning chinese
>fun

You're a funny one. I grew up having to learn Chinese and English simultaneously, and it was a challenge not to be equally mediocre in both. Loads of people here write in English like they're speaking in Chinese, or write in Chinese while thinking in English. All of the above sound like retards. I had to decide to be great in English and shit in Chinese because I didn't want to sound like a retard to anyone outside of this tiny island.
>>
>>51726128
>>51726308
chinese characters are pretty annoying but the language itself doesnt seem too bad
>>
>>51726496
Wait till you try the fucking syntax and the four-character phrases.
>>
>>51716657
Perfect.
>>
>>51729050
by 4 character phrases do you mean the idioms that make no sense
>>
>>51729721
They make sense if you bash your head hard enough on memorizing them and also what they mean.

Now you know why Asians (Chinese and Japanese in particular) are crazy good at math by default. Our languages already force us to memorize through rote learning. Math by comparison is an easy ride.
>>
>>51724939
I've been trying to process your sentence for 30 seconds but I still cannot understand what you were trying to say
>>
In term of being able to speak it in many different countries, Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian and Portuguese.

Anything other than that is just a matter of what regions interest you.
>>
>>51723563
Old english wasnt frenched up yet
Wrong period mate
>>
>>51717437
>Satw

shut it down
>>
>>51729050
Never mind the characters, these things are the hardest part of Chinese.
Also it's pretty easy to learn the language to a low level despite the tones, but as soon as you try to sound a bit more educated it suddenly becomes hard as fuck.
>>
>>51716623
Italian!!
>>
>>51733234
Yeah it's why I respect people like Kevin Rudd and Jon Huntsman who may not be 100% spot-on in the tones but they know what they're talking about and it's not a gimmick.

The god-tier level of white man speaking Chinese is Marks Rowswell aka Dashan in China. This guy's ability is the top 1% of all Chinese speakers.

kek, pretty nice.
It's really just a language you need to speak from birth to actually reach a good level, unless you really have an unnatural talent for language learning.
>>
>>51716623
if you don't speak an aggluginative language, you better learn one and start thinking with it.

I don't think this is true, I think you just need to put in a lot of work and dedication but having a talent is a big help.
