There recently was a thread about a french guy who did a Paris - Ulan Bataar road trip in an old Land Cruiser, passing through turkey, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and then the upper stans

Said he saw an ISIS flag flying above a checkpoint at some point

I always assumed the locals in Afghanistan were friendly people. They don't look like the kind of arabs we see in Iraq or Syria.

Don't wanna play the SJW card, but if a foreign military occupation force was patroling around my neighborhood I would probably be suspicious.

It's just that I head stories about cooperations between tribesmen and western militaries and that locals are general chill.

Panjwayi for the most part, fairly wild there and it was pretty messy, its where some US soldier went nuts and just massacred a ton of civilians

My father was a hippie in the 70's, and did the trip Paris -> India by car. Took him three years because he visited most of the Middle East on the way.

He told me he loved Afghanistan, that the country is very beautiful and that the people were friendly. So yeah, sure. But it's such a dangerous place now. One of my cousin worked with the UN there, and while she said the same thing about the people and the country, she also said that she would never go back there.

When I was little, he would often tell me stories about that trip, so I always wanted to do the same but most of the places he visited are shitholes now.

The only people he didn't like during his trip were Kurds. Never told me why, until recently, when, while drunk, he told that it's because he got robbed, beaten, and almost raped not once, but twice, by Kurds.
>>
>>51678721
not so fun in reality
I was with the armour and there were a lot of deaths in that area from mines and explosives
pretty stressful too when all you've got is a tinfoil-plated G-Wagen
>>
>>51678770
How many Taliban did you kill?

How many civilians did you kill?
>>
I would if it weren't dangerous. Central Asia is an incredibly interesting place to me.
>>
>>51678770
Are there really marijuana and papaver fields there? Are they the ''property'' of the Talibans? Do you believe that Talibans and ISIS are fighting for the control of drug trade?
>>
>>51678933
I was mostly a driver but there are at least 3 people I know for sure I killed because as Recon they really would just have us do all sorts of stupid shit that wasn't actually related to Recon. those three were all fairly close combat, mostly in the small villages of the area flushing out the Taliban, there were possibly more but those are the tree that I was face to face with and 100% sure of my killing them.

felt really strange for a long time after the first one because I shot him pretty close range and spent a long time just looking at him die.
the worst part really was that I didn't feel anything and it sort of made me feel like I was a bit amoral or something.
just felt like killing a deer or something.
>>
>>51679054
How many civilians did you kill?

Don't say none, every soldier in every conflict has killed civilians
>>
>>51679008
LOTS of weed
like holy fuck it was everywhere and the Afghani soldiers were baked 24/7

we smoked a lot of weed too because alcohol was pretty expensive to get a hold of and obviously there was nothing local, while weed was literally dirt cheap or often free.

I remember getting absolutely fucked one night when we attacked by some RPG teams, felt like I had tunnel vision the entire time and I wasn't even in my own body. Apparently I just started yelling the entire time.
>>
>>51679091
none that I'm sure of, like I said I'm only 100% on those 3

a friend of mine shot some kids though and got in trouble over it, though desu they were armed.
>>
>>51679155
>smoking weed in a third world shithole filled with crazy Talibans who have seen some shit since the russian invasion
I would have had a panic attack if I smoked with there, under these conditions, major paranoia.

>dude I'm so fucking baked what the fuck >Talibans are on their way to fuck us up
>I need to rest
>I'm blacking out
>where are we
>why are we here
All kinds of images of my dying in Afghanistan in the most inhuman ways would come to my mind.

Was the ANA shit at fighting?

Were they good people or shit people?
>>
>>51679211
its not that bad
really you have to learn to loosen up a little if you want to have a good time

most of the time it was so boring
>>51679227
yea they were a complete joke and were only good for dying to soften up a position for us.
they are not soldiers and act like they in a movie or something just sprinting in shooting like morons.

even in COD that shit gets you killed.

all they were good for was getting weed.
>>
>>51677204
Certainly once it calms down there in a few decades. Always wanted to explore the natural parts of central Asia, especially considering how few tourists go there. I'm interested to learn more about the indigenous Hazaras that live in some regions. They're supposed to be very hospitable. Hopefully they won't all be killed by the time things are stable there. They're the greatest hope that country has of rebuilding and joining the organized world.

>>51678765
What's sad is that Al Quaeda blew up all the Buddha statues and massacred Shia in the same area as your picture back in 2010. Fucking savages.

>>

The southern route through Wardak Province is more dangerous, but shorter. There is a longer, but safer, northern route that goes through Charikar.
