Much better to live in a city if you want to have things be convenient. You have to drive 32 km for anything but the most basic necessities in little towns, at least where I live in America.
From what little I know, Scandinavia has an interesting system set up where they try not to have too many towns under 4,000 people because they know there's not enough amenities there, but they also try to not have too many cities above a million people because otherwise they'd be too crowded and dangerous.
Though, Norway seems to have a ton of little towns. And you can't beat rural Norway in terms of scenery.
