It has nothing to do with wealth. I went to a school with terrible facilities that outperformed the "rich" city school downtown. It's about quality of student and their parents.

we have under trained teachers in our public schools imo.
80% of the teachers that i knew in high school were dumber than some of the students. and most of our teachers in elementry school up through middle school had no emotional maturity either, they'd scream at the class more than they'd teach it. i went to some ghetto ass schools though. looking back on some of the teachers i had as a kid now that i'm older, i'm convinced some of them were literally crazy.
i saw a report on how well trained finnish teachers are a few months back and how much schooling they need to go through, that teachers there are seen to be as important to society as doctors are for example. teachers here aren't regarded in the same light. it kind of made sense to me watching that just how bad our average educators are.
not ALL of them were bad. i had a few that really could connect to most students and really made us think about the world differently, but they were pretty rare

I had a high school English teacher who talked about 9/11 and how much she hated Bush all year long.
I went to a public school in California for free because of grants. You can get whatever education you want if you're actually capable and you apply to the scholarships.
Admittedly I also worked a part time job, though.

Historic inequality, which is rapidly disappearing. Decades ago there existed "Dropout factories" in inner cities and ghettos that had 60%+ dropout rates. Minority dropout rates have improved since then and will only get better.
They had to reduce the allure and strength of organized crime, inner-city local corruption, truancy.
Iceland is homogeneous, rich, European and white, the US is not

It's not a matter of money. America spends more money per student than Canada, Singapore, Funland, Japan, the Netherlands, and most other countries (only five spend more). It still does far worse than these countries.

It isn't really the schools themselves so much as the families that send children to school.
For various reasons, a lot of Americans are trapped in the cycle of poverty, which leads to poor academic performance and a bad future on their part.
Another problem is that schools are administered by local governments, which Americans pay the least attention to. Not to mention the local government of a rich, well educated area will be much more competent than the local government of a poor area, despite the poor area needing public services more.

Unlike most other countries, we don't get a number of small breaks during the year. We get one HUGE break between grade levels. I think that probably has something to do with it.
Also our teachers are the worst people on the planet, and colleges here are insanely expensive.
Their education standard is above the European average. It's their minxoritoes that drag them down. Put a couple of million Syrians in Germany and their statistics will look shit as well. Wait..

There's a law here that EVERYONE has a right to education, including retarded people. I know a lady who has a severely retarded daughter; the government has probably spent millions of dollars on tutors, equipment, ect. for her.
The majority of the students don't need help like that, so the government spends a few thousand per school on some books.
One of the biggest problems is that it's easier to be the cool kid when you act like a drooling retard, and in America being the most popular is everything to most people. It's why we have such rampant celebrity worship.
