There is counties that were drawn up in the 1800's but they are not actually a thing, they hold no political or administrative relevance and are not used as statistical areas, they are simply lines the British drew on the map and never used. I've never heard of counties outside of the time I found out about them on wikipedia or in this thread.
There are local government areas, but those are regional or city councils, the county level of government doesn't exist in Australia.
I've never really understood why counties exist desu, they just seem like an extra layer of Government that serves no purpose
