Russia presents proof of Turkey’s role in ISIS oil trade

The Russian Defense Ministry has released evidence which it says unmasks vast illegal oil trade by Islamic State and points to Turkey as the main destination for the smuggled petrol, implicating its leadership in aiding the terrorists.

According to Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov, Russia is aware of three main oil smuggling routes to Turkey.

“According to our data, the top political leadership of the country - President Erdogan and his family – is involved in this criminal business.”

There's a difference between those things crossing the border and the Turkish government being complicit in allowing those things to cross the border.

I can buy heroin in any major US city; does that mean that the US government is both allowing it to pass through the Mexican border and profiting from the sale of it?

Only thing Turkey lost from that is extra geopolitical advantage it has from being energy highway and not much either as it already houses pipelines from Azerbaijan, Iran and Iraq. On the other hand, Russia is toying with their image as a stable economy that won't suffer from major fuck ups and their only source of income which is natural resources.

Mate, I hate to break it to you but Russian economy is completely dependent on natural resources. Your only relevacy in this world is having 1980's Soviet technology and energy reserves. You are pretty much an Arab state at this point, even a poor one at.

I believe it when confirmed by a credible source

In the meantime I can't believe so many people are taking Russia's side on this.

It was Russia's fault that the Su-24 was shot down. It seems like shitty communications equipment prevented the pilot from hearing Turkey's warnings. This is Russia's fault, if you're going to piss around near someone else's borders, it's your responsibility to follow the rules. Use modern fighters if the older ones don't work properly, if you have no modern fighters with working comms equipment then stay at home.

In the meantime regarding the ISIS oil, innocent until proven guilty. Turkey is our ally and is well within its rights to defend its air space. I'm sure Turkey would support us if we shot down a Russian fighter that violated our air space. We should support Turkey

So the inviolability of a sovereign countrys airspace doesn't really actually exist and it's all up to an arbitrary amount of time that is determined by "what feels right".

Good to know. I'm sure russians don't mind if finns fly a few F-18's over leningrad then. They probably won't even take a minute, which to my subjective opinion is a time that feels completely alright.

Did Israeli and Greek jets fly over Syrian border after declaration of new engagement rules?

God I hate this argument. How do the two examples even relate in any way imaginable?

Greece is a NATO ally, the Aegean Sea is not a war zone and neither side issued a warning as strict as the one we issued to Russia.

On the other hand, Russia is not in the NATO, our Syrian borders opens to the shittiest part of the world with more conflicts than I can keep count of and we've warned the Russians. Repeatedly. They violated our airspace before and have been warned on a few occasions. Hell, our PM even went all "we'll even shoot down birds if they violate our airspace yo." They wanted to test it for some reason, sent a drone in and it got shot. For some reason, they then decided it would be such a great idea to fly near and within our borders with their transponders shut down.

Whether or not we overreacted is another discussion entirely. But stop comparing it to other occasions.

The problem with this, is they get a brand new, fancy rifle. They make a quick calculation in their head and figure they can get three shitty old AKs if they sell it, so they do. It's understandable, really.

But we won't supply them with the guns that they would prefer to use, because us Western countries have preferred government suppliers, and they don't like it when you pick up a few crates of ex-service weapons from Branko, the Bulgarian arms dealer. In fact, the government are probably contractually obligated not to do that.

The level of threat that one plane posed may be small, but the level of geopolitical threat continued incursions into foreign airspace by Russia as a whole, of which this particular one is included, is kinda a massive fucking deal.

This was a MILITARY aircraft violating another nation's sovereignty, after repeated warnings that doing that will get you shot down.

It's also probably not why the plane was shot down in the first place.

The millions Turkey might be saving from getting cheap IS oil is nothing to a nation-state. Maybe if it was billions, but it's not.

Turkey has been talking about this buffer zone idea for a while, and that combined with >"protecting ethnic Turks" is probably what decided it. But Russia can't call them for protecting ethnic Turks, because they used the very same excuse themselves not long ago...

Also, you know there's no point to shoot down a jet of an ally who was flying home without bombs (read- not dangerous) as it was flying home after the opperation on bombing oil lorries at turkish border.

They're not. If you run the IS production estimates against the estimated earnings, there's literally no possible way for them to make that much unless they're somehow offloading it way, way above the price per barrel of legit oil.

They might scrape two digit millions, but nowhere near hundreds of millions.

If you simply took the estimated earnings of ISIS per day from oil vs. the production estimates in the media at face value, someone two links down the chain wouldn't even be able to make millions. The fact is, there's a lot of hype around how much this trade is worth, most of it is bullshit.

People have known about Turkish support for ISIS for a long time now. It was quite telling the way the only started their "anti-ISIS" campaign (really targeted towards the Kurds) after the fall of al Raqqa's main supply route from Turkey through Tel Abyad.

>In the meantime I can't believe so many people are taking Russia's side on this.

Europeans have never been comfortable with Turkey or Muslim immigrants, and that discomfort has only gotten worse since the Paris attacks.

>This is Russia's fault, if you're going to piss around near someone else's borders, it's your responsibility to follow the rules. Use modern fighters if the older ones don't work properly, if you have no modern fighters with working comms equipment then stay at home.

The key fact is that the Russian plane, by Turkey's own admission, was in Turkish airspace for precisely 17 seconds. That's a little less time than it takes to read this paragraph aloud.

I feel sorry for Russia. They are belligerent but I don't think without cause. They aren't aggressive, evil USSR anymore. They're just another corrupt state run by dictator, unlucky in circumstance to be big enough to be a 'threat' but actually in relatively precarious position, not in economic position of China, historical bad guy. If we tried half the shit with China we do with Russia the world would be far less peaceful.
