what is populism ??

sound like a buzzword to me.
>>
>>51557016
Then the commodity export based economy is a consequence of populism as well. At the end of the day, populism and a shitty culture are to blame for the current state of the continent.
>>
>>51556841

the problem isnt that you export commodities, the problem is that you dont tier up that industry

>>
>>51557227
That's why I said it's based on commodity export. The numbers looked great during Lula's presidency, but in reality our industry was stagnant while agriculture, mining, oil represented the bulk of our economic surplus. When commodity prices fell as they always do since they're cyclical, we entered a recession.
>>
>>51557186
but commodity export has been going since the colony.
>>
>>51557227
Brazilian industry already operates at it's limit.

National Brazilian brand products are too expensive to produce due to inefficiency, so exporting them is out of the question.

Funny thing is those "populists" like Correa and Evo have reduced the external debt.

But still I don't get a solid definition for populism. Every person I ask gives me a different answer.

why? because poor people = easy votes, theyre also easy to manipulate. more poor people = more power to the political class

Illegal by what standards? Borrowing money and refusing to pay it back is now okay? Isn't that typical of populist leaders?

50% respect to what?. I mean they reduced the debts in relation of what they received.
>>

>Equator
>Paying debts

http://internacional.elpais.com/internacional/2015/11/30/america/1448923590_863019.html

just in January, Equator's external debt grow 31%: Imagine how much it has grown since then (now the country's economy is even shrinking).
>>
>>51558722
I doubt that, im sure the main reason are low economic freedom policies. brazil already has a manufacture industry, it just needs to be geared differently. some of your industry depends on your government to exist, be it through subsidies or contracts, and that make it seem that it would be uncompetitive, but failing to see that if the government didnt do things like obscene tariffs and high corporate taxes, things would be cheaper to produce

thats my opinion though
>>
>>51560027
He might have called his own lawyers and economists, who would have said exactly what he wanted. And how is a debt considered illegal? You borrow money and agree to pay it back with interest. There was surely a fixed contract signed. If you can't (or don't want to) pay it back, you default. What do you think is more likely: an international organization that has deals with hundreds of countries with a reputation to maintain and no personal financial ambissions made a change on that fixed contracted without anyone knowing, or that Correa simply didn't want to pay back what he owed?
>>
>>51560516
>brazil already has a manufacture industry

Which produces cars for wealthy Americans or sold in Brazil for 2x the price.

Industry gets tax exemption already.
>>
>>51560286
No cumplir los plazos no es lo mismo que cancelar la deuda.

>Si lo cumple, sostiene Bloomberg, será la primera vez que haga frente a sus obligaciones internacionales en los últimos 180 años.

So a populist would be the first one to pay the debts in time?. Lets wait and see. It was a bad year. 31% of debt grow is pretty bad. Still our debt is worse for instance.

>>51560558
I dont know about laws. I guess is different if you personally borrow money for yourself, is your problem. But if you are in charge of a country you are playing with money of your population, so I guess they have a case of corruption. But I don't really know, I'm a total noob about laws.

>No cumplir los plazos no es lo mismo que cancelar la deuda.

noo, ¿y qué pasa cuando no se paga una deuda? te quitan tus propiedads, te niegan acceso a créditos y un montón de otras cosas. es la misma cosa.

> Still our debt is worse for instance.

I don't think so, both countries must have similar debt/gdp ratio. But at least Colombia is not in recession like them.
>>
>>51556647
Still better than yours 200yo banan republic with world-policeman ambitions.
>>
>>51561554
el punto es que Correa si redujo la deuda, no simplemente dejo de pagar en el plazo pactado. Claro en el banco mundial no estan felices y por eso Ecuador se pego a china.

Idk. Break it down by neighborhood or any other political/geographic distinction (city, community). A neighborhood where 80% of the residents have college degrees is going to be way more functional, safer, prosperous, etc. than a neighborhood where 7% of the population is educated.

Same for a country. Just something I've realized lately. Any place's quality of life/safety/etc., is closely tied to the intelligence of its residents. I'm not trying to shit on any ethnicity either, but studies show abstract intelligence does differ along ethnic lines.
>>
>>51571533
Argentina and Uruguay have 96 average IQ (probably didn't test the north/villas), the same as Italy and a lot of European countries.
Correlation does not imply causation

Intelligence isn't the only factor, but it definitely plays a large role in the quality of any given location.
