>Affordable and reliable clean energy technologies are vital to cut global emissions and address global energy poverty. Mission Innovation brings together governments and private investors to take clean energy projects from research and development to commercial outcomes. Australia has a lot to contribute, given our world class research, strong history of clean energy innovation and because we are one of the largest energy exporters to the world.

>So when's Australia going nuclear?
We should have gone nuke 30years ago because we've got the most stable continent on earth, it doesn't have to be in someone's backyard and enough uranium to last nearly forever.

But we've got fucking hippies that think it'll eat their chillens and rape the whales.
>>
>>51495779
They wont since we never will and Australia doesn't do anything unless New Zealand does it first
>>
>>51496211
OP here, this is exactly what I mean.
Its like an ironic joke by God or some shit that Australia is perfect for Nuclear power, but the general public is that against it.
>>

>>
>>51496321
>Why don't other countries just use their abundant rivers to generate electricity?
Our river system is shitty and fucked. We'd be better off using solar thermal.
>>
>>51496321
>Why don't other countries just use their abundant rivers to generate electricity?
Because it generates literally fuck all energy compares to the amount of money it takes to build and maintain.
Especialyl compared to Nuclear power.
>>
>>51495779
Nuclear is actually very expensive to build. Doesn't make it bad, but if you're claiming it's cheap, then you're objectively wrong.
>>
>>51496468
Australia spends 1.8 Billion a year bailing out the dying coal industry.

I think we could afford Nuclear power.
>>
>>51495548
Are you so dense that you think having only 1 source of energy makes sense?
>>
>>51496490
Thats a real retarded question you got there friend.
>>
>>51496489
It's kinda sorta fairly hard to stump up the money upfront to build a nuclear power plant though. It'd cost a few years of your bail-out shekels, which is a fair pile of shekels.
>>
>>51496599
But its still worth it.
It would boost our economy considerably in the long run, plus the amount of money we're literally throwing away on 'green' power could be used for more useful things.

>>
>>51496635
Well, it may or may not be worth it, depends on whether the tens of billions you spend on nuclear plants would be better invested in something else that returns a better profit. The amount of money it would take, especially in Australia, is a once in a generation kind of expenditure.
>>
>>51496564
Then why were you only advocating for nuclear while also claiming it's cheap?
>>
>>51496704

Not entirely, we've got a lot of sunshine here, its quiet and on a small scale it does pretty good for what it is. But its expensive... because we've been dragging our arse on developing the technology.

first of all, it can but its insanely expensive too.
secondly, the whole point of why they shill solar power so hard, especially solar panels, is because they are good for the environment, green, etc etc when they aren't.

this is how every "debate" into alternate sources of energy go, it seems amazing, but the further down the path you go the more hidden expenses pop up, which aren't accounted for in the "fair" assessment of how much different types of energy cost, but are the only things that make solar doable

It could well prop up what we've got, putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak. Years ago I designed and put in a few solar-assisted telco sites, it basically offsets a bit of the usage through the day and through the night they run on their batteries. Mostly in remote areas, because we've got fucking 1000's of them and it costs the earth to put mains power into them.

>Also, wind, solar, hydroelectric etc power aren't free.
Yes they are. You already have all this potential power available for free and you're not using it. Uranium is not for free, it costs a lot and digging it out is dangerous stuff. It contaminates the area etc, it's an unstable and dangerous material. Plus, uranium will eventually become scarce. There isn't such an enormous amount of it around. It clearly isn't a future prooof technology so why invest in it?

I really don't understand this resistance against renewable power... It's completely clean and safe. What's the fucking problem??

Well, maybe if you talked in average expected kWhs, I could've made a better comparison. But a nuclear plant that costs $5-10 billion overseas, you can be guaranteed it'll be at least $20 billion here because lolstraya as well as the lack of expertise, and it'll service maybe a million homes.

better than wasted money on renewables.

Renewable energy is the future lad. Accept it. Nuclear energy is a brief parenthesis in human history.

That is, at least, until fusion energy becomes real.

Renewables would be cheaper when you can invest in smaller-scale, and you would recoup the investment money faster, meaning the growth rate would be sharper. So no.

I expect there would be an added advantage to all those small-scale projects, in that in a country of low population density as ours, there would be much less loss in the power lines if planned efficiently, which adds up. In more densely populated countries, that might not be much of an issue.

People always focus on muh wind and solar, but there's a good dozen or so currently viable renewable energy sources, and at least one or two are well suited to any one country, and cheaper than most non-renewable sources.

People realise that spent nuclear fuel is less radioactive than it was when it was taken out of the ground right?
