Obama was a mediocre president, and given the nature of the system and the true extent of his own power, and largely dealing with a legislature composed of a majority of the opposite party--not to mention same for the governorships-- that's really not so bad in retrospect.
There will always be a racial element to be found in the disapproval of Obama, though I truly don't think he was hated anymore than any hypothetical white Democrat president would have been leading the country during the same time frame. Probably slightly more because of his race, but just slightly.
Obama's approval numbers have hovered around the mid-40s for most of his time in office. He's never touched the lows that Bush faced. I think history will remember him mainly positively. Obamacare might yet prove to be his biggest stain--without Obamacare, I think he would have been remembered quite fondly, actually.
The fact of the matter is that in a normal political climate without some big earth shattering event to rally around, any given president will remain praised by his own party in posterity and scorned by the opposite.
