How being able to speak only the simplest language in the world which can be mastered even by Americans does feel like?
>>
>>51452302

I feel like what makes English "hard" is that it gets really complicated after a while. It's probably easy to get a basic proficiency, but there are so many words that have similar but different meanings. Uninterested vs. disinterested, or the difference between interested, uninterested, and not uninterested. It gets harder the deeper you go, and it can be very precise.

Disinterested can also be used to mean not interested, indifferent or uninterested. These quirks are normal for every language and ever changing of course. The fact that they do exist, and thr great impact of how you word yourself has, is what makes languages so interesting imo.

>Disinterested can also be used to mean not interested, indifferent or uninterested.

It can be and is, but not from any educated writer.

Putting it simply:

>"Not interested" means that I know and I don't care about what you're saying
>"Indifferent" means that I'm not concerned with it. I don't particularly care, but I also don't care enough to be definitely uninterested.
>"Disinterested" isn't a value statement. I don't have a personal stake in what's being considered and can have an objective viewpoint.

I'm not interested in Scientology.

I'm indifferent to /an/, as I've never visited and barely know that it exists.

I'm disinterested when mediating a dispute between two strangers. I don't know either of them, and I can give an impartial judgement, as I don't have an interest either way.

Fixed that. Also grammatical gender is completely stupid and useless. How can a knife, a fork and a spoon be neuter, male and female (as in German)? What new or useful information does that confer? Absolutely fucking nothing. It's just a silly arbitrary barrier to foreigners who want to learn the language.
>>
>>51453883
Has to do with sentence flow and what sounds nice since gender is going to change your adjectives, articles and whatnot.
Not that you have to worry about articles or anything.
>>
>>51453883
Without genders, language is boring. And it's not like genders are hard to determine. In our case, it's just the last letter in the noun that you have to pay attention to.
Also, you're making it seem like someone made our languages up so they could be hard to understand by foreigners.

Due to the fact that English is an amalgamation of 3 or 4 different languages it has one of the richest and largest vocabularly's on earth, euro jfs on here like to pretend it's easy (but that's onl;y because they have been learbning it since they were 5) but for most of them their vocab will only be good enough to get by on a basic level. Not one of them on here, for example, could read and understand Shakespeare in it's original English.

Absolutley. I speak english with a lot of people. The simplest to understand are often the ones who learned it in school. If yeo speak to someone from India, it is very different from a British person, or an American. Then there are differences between the Americans.

>Being bilingual in French and English, I have often had arguments about which of the two languages was "better" than the other. Native French speakers will always always plead the superiority of the French language, while native English speakers will do the eulogy of their language. It's only natural. People want to believe that the language of their upbringing and culture is the best in the world. Although I grew up with French as my first language, it has long been clear to me that English was richer, more flexible, more nuanced and less ambiguous than French. It hasn't been easy to convince my fellow French speakers of this claim. Their first reaction is usually to deny it or ask me for "proofs". It is in this spirit that I thought of making a list illustrating how English typically has several words, sometimes adding nuances, sometimes affecting the formality level, when French only had one word.
