I'm starting biomedicine the year after next year which will last 3 years and then going into medicine which will be another 5 years.

How old are you atm?
>>
>>51446701
I'm 18, turning 19 next year.

I didn't make the cut to get straight into medicine.
>>
Shit lad, do you feel excluded or something?

I'm gonna start uni the year after next year, meaning I'll be 22 years old and my classmates will all be 18 yo, and I'm already feeling quite strange about it. It's also really hard not to feel like I'm "delayed" (my English is failing me atm, but I think you get what I mean), even though I think that not going to uni right after I finished high school was the best thing I did. I just wish I hadn't taken so long to find what I wanted to do... Well, at least I look like I'm still 18 at most.
>>
>>51446002
You just focus in your shit m8. IKTF. It's your life. Not theirs. Not anyones. Keep at it. The best to you

Fortunately, I've met some nice people who don't judge me for being "old", so I don't feel as excluded as I'd feel if they weren't there.
It's really hard because we have the notion that by 30 you should already be an adult with a stable career.

Infact cognitive capacity remains more-or-less stable from the ages of 25 to 60, then has a slight dropoff in your 60s and a bigger drop after 70. There are of course variances with each individual.

Crying actually helped me for a while.

Pretty sure decay begins at 25-30.

You're right when saying that the decay becomes noticeable during your 60s, but strictly speaking the decay starts much earlier.
>>
>>51447987
>You're right when saying that the decay becomes noticeable during your 60s
And even then, not always. I've personally known a few 80 year olds who were mentally comparable with a person in their 50s, although I will note they were all women. Men in general seem to decay earlier than women, although that might just be an artifact of women having an easier life with less stress and not usually being employed in dangerous or physically taxing jobs.
>>
>>51446002
my brother graduate at 30 just for BA. be proud that you got in med school anon.
>>
>>51448101
That seems to be contradicted by the fact that most nursing home/assisted living residents are female.
>>
>>51448178
Women live longer and have less intrinsic ability to provide for themselves at any age, so that goes without saying. Elderly men also have a markedly higher suicide rate - many choose to take their own life than lose their independence.
>>
>>51448178
isn't that because women live longer
>>
>>51446002
my brother is 22 at an ivy league med school and he says that there is a 29 year there. He was a practicing lawyer and decided he wanted to become a doctor instead.
The average started age for med school in the US is 25, its also not uncommon to see 25+ there either.
As long as you got in, thats all that matters.
>>
Yes, I'm 28 and I'm going back to university in January after leaving 8 years ago. I'm afraid I'll have forgotten a lot of remedial shit and also that it'll be weird to be around a bunch of kids who just got out of high school and have no experience with the real world.
>>
>>51448337
Thank you, you get it. It's awkward as fuck being around people with a shitload of energy and expectations. They're afraid of failure and reject anything related to it. What they don't know is that someday they'll face some tough shit in the real world. I think it would be easier for me to adapt if that kind of atmosphere didn't exist. I'm not using it as an excuse, you'd really understand this point if you wore these shoes.

What for are you there? To get a profession. So relax and get it.

>>

Interesting fact: The likelihood of dying increases about 10% each decade after your 30s, although the odds of a sudden, out-of-the-blue death decrease with age. Which means that as you get older, there's a greater chance that your death will be preceded by obvious signs of ill health instead of those stories you always hear of 20 year old athletes dropping of a heart attack during practice.
>>
>>51446861
>>51448422
You know, this is one of the most useful advises I've gotten from people close to me. I understand it, and I agree with it. But putting it into practice is what's hard. External factors can become a huge influence on your emotional state, especially during exam weeks.

I remember a story from a few years ago of a double decker bus in England that crashed into a storefront and that the driver was 77. Although it appeared to be mechanical failure, naturally many people argued that he was too old to drive a bus, which is perfectly understandable.

There's a very good reason for mandatory retirement ages where not performing your job properly due to health issues could get people killed. My dad is a computer programmer/engineer and there's no particular reason why he could not still do his job at 77. If he had a stroke while working, nobody but himself would be affected. He would just slump over his keyboard and that would be that. If he were driving a bus full of schoolkids and stroked out, not so good.

Christopher Lee needed a stunt double for some of the light saber fight scenes in AOTC because as he told George Lucas "I can do the swordfighting, but I'm 80! I can't run anymore." A cop can't use a stunt double if he isn't able to run and tackle a 300 pound felon.

Mae, Tico in Austria here, come study here, here people study at a much later age. There are a bunch of 25+ people somewhere in the middle of their bachelor
>>
>>51448663
I understand what you're talking about

I'm only 22 but I've come to learn that negative feelings and thoughts of whatever degree MUST be fully accepted and recognized in your psyche if they are to be properly dealt with in your self-esteem, thus following behavior.

Yes, 28 is older. It's unusual. Will people receive you unusually? Not enough to be negative, and only if you don't act unusually yourself. Does it feel a bit bad regardless? Yes, it does. And? Well, nothing. That's it. You're done, so continue your life.

Unfortunately this is nothing to severe traumatic experiences and I still wonder how it would be best to get through such trauma yet at the same time live a life of confidence, reassurance, and self-esteem.
>>

Oye, que para estudiar no hay edad. Con 28 años es una edad inmejorable. Pero tienes que ir decidido a sacarlo adelante sea como sea porque como vuelvas a desanimarte será tropezar otra vez en la misma piedra.
>>
>>51448882
>austrian father

Well, since studying is free and there are no restrictions other than needed to have done your high school finals many people just study whenever they feel like. Many people want to work after finishing school and only come back later when they decide they want to aim for a better career.

Quite a few people also never did their finals, I myself know two people 25-27 who are going to evening classes to get their "Matura" (HS finals) so they can start studying next year.

Here you only need to complete ~10 credits per semester to receive student support, so there are a decent number of people who just take FOREVER to study. One of the student body representatives (nicknamed "Porno") in technical Chemistry is like 28 and has been doing his bachelor for 8 years.

Not saying that these are all good things, but there are enough people like that here

Yep I have friends like that too.

I wish I could have that mentality. I´m sure you know that here we're trained to escalate through school automatically. Must be nice having a mentality that separates age from academic success.

Fucking costa rican fag, man up, what did you expect at first place by entering med school at 28? Live up to your years, damn it.
>>
>>51449515
Well, they aren't the majority and it's mostly guys since mandatory military service separates school and uni, many girls do go straight through school to uni. But older students are not looked down upon at all. Other students tend to look down on those who take their studies seriously, which is also a shitty attitude 2bh, that's why Austrians don't excel academically
>>

lel what? That doesn't sound very 1st-world-like
>>
>>51449314
To be quite honest I dont think I've met anyone in med school who genuinely want 'to help ppl'. There are people who started planning for med school since high school and others who may have tried different things in life and in the end chose to give medicine a shot. There's no need to be smug about it mate.

History desu. Wish I studied something useful, but they offered a really good scholarship and my family wasn't doing well at the time, so I went with it to fund the entire thing on my own.

Also learned 3D modelling while studying but there are very few video game companies here, so that hasn't gotten me a job either. Applied to some vacancies in Europe, but no one really wants to bother sponsoring me and I can see why.

Applying to a few scholarships to study business in Europe this year, fingers crossed desu.

There's only so much you can do in a curriculum like CS. And to be honest, the vast majority of the people there were doing it not out of passion, but basically because CS was a guaranteed way to get a job out of school. They don't care.

Lead them socially, share your life experiences with them. I assume you learned a lot about exercising and nutrition in the army, help the guys at the uni gym. My best friend is 10 years older than me and I'm thankful for all the advice he's given me.

That brief post alone shows 3 things that you have experienced and most of them haven't: Marriage, raising a kid, the army. Most people respect experience, and you don't really want to be around those who don't anyway.
