To my understanding It's because It costs so much to employ people who work in car manufacturing and the Unions prevent the companies from replacing them with machines so it got to the point where to try and produce average family cars for Holden, they ended costing more than your average Toyotas and Hondas so they just gave up trying to produce average cars and focused on "Family Luxury Cars". The only people who buy Holden in 2015 are cashed up bogans.
That being said, the Australian car market is extremely competitive, more so then even the US.
