It started to prevent masturbation, which was considered extremely detrimental to one's physical and mental health. Veterans who were circumcised as adults to prevent infection while living in the trenches of WWI kept it going somewhat. The hygiene and "it looks better" arguments are used to justify it now, although the real reasons for its continued existence is extra profits for hospitals.
Imagine a doctor charging your parents $400 to cut your ears off and then selling them to a medical research company for $2000 each on top of that.
