While the basics of government are pretty much universally understood most people have never taken the time to sit down, go over the constitution, read it, figure out what it means, and see all the subsequent court cases and events that have changed it over time along with our way of governing.
Like it used to be that Imminent Domain (taking property for government use with compensation) only applied to the federal government. So in the early 1800's, States could take land as they pleased without anything in return given to the people who owned it.
Then around 1868 (give or take) the Constitution was amended, rendering the bill of rights applicable to state governments.
However only specific portions of it which have slowly been implemented over time as the federal courts see fit.
Thats just an example of one of the things I've gotten out of it.
