Why did Europeans stop making iconic landmarks like big Ben or the Eiffel tower after the 19th century?

Will we see something by the end of the 21st century?

I think the difference is that back in old times if you built an ugly palace the King would just have you thrown into a dungeon so artists and architects had to be pretty sure that their visionary ideas were really visionary.

Today it's the other way around, everyone is afraid to tell an artist that they're full of shit because they're afraid of sounding like rubes.

To be honest, that is the same sort of shit as the buttplug for France.

Or don't tell me if the artist hadn't painted a cute face or pine tree branches on there you would still have complained that it looked obscene and out of place, yet a mammal that gang rapes to reproduce isn't.

Then again, with how Netherlands is an african country these days, an icon of gang rape and violence prettied up into a false icon is a perfect way to display the spirit of the nation.

The Beaux-Arts was a dick-waving contest to see who could stuff the most caryatids and Corinthian orders into a rehashed Greco-roman facade. But in spite of that superfluous shit, they sometimes had ingenious, even modern ways of utilizing the space inside. We could all learn from them in that regard, just as Mies did

It wasn't supposed to be about class. Most of the building was distinctly oriented towards cultural events and performances. The new Humboldtforum approximates the same thing, but does so under the guise of a past monarchical opulence. It's dishonest to say the least. And this is what passes for historical authenticity I guess. 3 out of 4 facades isn't bad, isn't it?

depends on which era but I agree tbh when it comes to Baroque stuff
honestly I feel sort of insulted and queasy looking at this stuff, its just Gaudy and lacking in the subtle style and eloquence that characterized European art/architecture and instead looks like an Oriental mess

modern minimalist stuff goes back to that original aesthetic without directly copying the Romans/Greeks which is nice, but there is definitely a lot of gaudy crap made today (like a lot of 'abstract' stuff) still art needs that to develop

I do agree the mix of styles looks out of place though I still like minimalist styles, they are truer to European values than gaudy over the top Orientalist wank

not that old architecture shouldn't be maintained and protected, just styles cant stay the same forever

I think the biggest problem today is how over-saturated we are and don't know where to go from here, not to mention art has developed so fast that people will fund any hack since they are unsure what is 'good' and what is just a fad

Exactly this. It's like art has become purely an investment, where you buy it just because it's 'art' and therefore can be sold once it's worth something, and not because there was any skill behind the work.

Pollock isn't actually that bad
its easy to make fun looking at tiny .jpegs online, but his art works best in person as an 'experience' simply due to the shear size and weight the piece has, not to mention the emotion it causes to well up when you look at the work
its actually pretty amazing considering the simplistic; yet chaotic nature of the piece

I like Rothko for the same reason

there are plenty of copy-cats however who simply aren't able to capture the same feelings and their art ends up being crap despite looking superficially similar
