A tiny bit of history regarding American football,
Initially, kickoffs were a much more common and important part of the game, as well as punts. There was also originally no forward passing, players could only run the ball and could lateral backwards. Without the modern rules that are designed for TV, the game was also much faster flowing and the clock only rarely stopped. There were also much fewer pads involved and most players just wore leather helmets and maybe some slightly thicker clothes than normal. Basically it was more similar to rugby. Not VERY similar to rugby, but more so than now by quite a bit.
