This is part of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. On the walls surrounding this courtyard are the names of all soldiers who have fallen in service (all wars/conflicts). Behind is the tomb of the unknown soldier (fell in France, WW1), and from the picture you can see parliament house (there is a road leading out from the memorial it leading towards it).
The war memorial also had a really good museum attached. It's definitely worth seeing if you ever go to Canberra (and imo, about the only thing that could make you want to go to that boring city).

It was originally entirely symbolic. A lot of people in WW1 had no idea how their son/husband/father died. There was no body to mourn and no information about his last moments (as he'd likely been killed by artillery in a large assault)
They found some poor schmuck who was mostly intact but that they couldn't identify and interred him in westminster abbey. Pride of place alongside kings and great generals; people could then go and mourn in their missing because he *could* be their missing father/husband/son.
It's ceremonially to give the highest sense of honour to the thousands of poor shits that died in unmarked, unknown graves freezing and alone so that the nation persevered.

The guards are more just a sign of respect, which is why the wear their full dress uniforms, but their guns are loaded and I'm pretty sure if someone tried to vandalize it they would shoot them. Don't know though.

All Finnish war dead were in the cemeteries of their home towns if at all possible.
Those who could not be recovered from enemy territory were usually buried after the war in collective graves in Russia. There are memorials dedicated to them there.
Also a lot of churches were the war dead are buried have a small memorial for the unknown soldiers.
Here's the "Hero Cross" located in the "heroes graveyard" section of Hietaniemi cemetary.
It isn't very "heroic" or elaborate but I think that it is fitting for our protestant heritage and the war it commemorates
