Prior to Ireland's independence from the rest of Britain, were the Irish considered to be British (much like the Scottish are now)?

maybe in the immediate preceding to Ireland's independence, however, for the majority of the history in which Ireland was a part of the union they were treated far worse than the scots and this was mostly due to religious stigma. Protestant scots and protestant english were seen as the same race but the Catholic Irish were seen as lower and it showed with their under representation in places of power and wealth in comparison to the other people of Britain. This is why Irish nationalism was stronger to the point of the creation of terrorist organisations etc and why you never saw the same thing in scotland, or to the same extent at least.

Wel, first of all, ask yourself what defines "Britishness?" Global imperialism? Massive army and navy that wages war with other European nations? Produces great works of philosophy, literature, and technological advancements?
And what would Irish be? Almost Druidic people? More descendant of Viking settlers than Normans or Anglo-Saxons? More interested in smaller scale cultural rituals (poetry, music of a more folk-bent, drinking and jigging) than great works of classical music, opera, and architecture?

Considering that half the navy and army was Irish at one point, and some of the greatest writers and scientists hailing from Ireland, kinda confuses the point.

Protestant Nordies being taught of as "Ulster Scots" rather than "Irish" (but Orangemen) is a relatively new thing, spurred on by the association of Irish identity with the Free State/Republic/Catholicism.
