The Faroese language got an official written language in the 19th century. Jákup Jakobsen's phonetic language lost to V.U. Hammershaimb's written language inspired by Icelandic. Jákup Jakobsen then went to Shetland to make them a written language. He wrote down a bunch of words and sentences in the Norn language. The language then went extinct and the only records of it were written by Jákup Jakobsen. Then a century later Shetlanders wanted to revive their language but had very little sources, so they copied a lot from Faroese.
