People don't want to change what they have. There are a lot of atheists here but we still don't want Muslims in our country and we don't want people wearing Burka's here either.
Same goes for any other countries, we don't want culture that isn't ours. And I'm pretty sure that's the main drive for other countries as well. It has a lot more to do with xenophobia than race or religion. The difference is only in the fact the Europe was pretty mixed up to begin with so the difference in culture doesn't clash as much.
