American guy's thoughts after 2 years in Russia: https://youtu.be/34Mp8K-aNIk?t=468
Lecture about Russian Language, Literature and Civilization: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cEvF_Sf48g

-What places are worth visiting?
-Besides Moscow and St. Petersburg you may want to visit so called "Golden Ring" - a chain of 8 ancient Russian cities.

-What is Russians' opinion on #nation?
-Unlike people of USA and EU, who can easily move from one place to another, the majority of Russians are not travelers. Therefore, they lack experience of communicating with representatives of other nations and mostly base their opinion on movies.
Anyway, an opinion is a personal thing and placing tags on 140 millions of people is a bad idea.

-Why do Russians wear sportsuits with stripes and squat?
-They don't. Your impression is based on a selected pool of pictures, representing a fading sub-culture of gopniks.

-Are Stalin and Putin tyrants? Are they popular?
-No doubt they are strong and appreciated leaders, who have guts to make harsh decisions, but they are too complex persons to simply call them "bad guys". Many Russians support them because they believe that such big state can only be ruled with a strong hand, which will bring order to all injustice. People love them not only for charisma and courage, but also for developing the country.
However, there's a significant number of citizens, who consider them bloody despots and wish to have a less powerful leader.
And, of course, the majority is always uncertain.
>>
-Tell me about current propaganda and totalitarianism. From abroad it seems, Russia is almost China or USSR-2.0.
-Yes, propaganda does exist and it's quite strong. Formal opposition is a bunch of aging clowns, while informal slackers are kept away from TV and elections. Besides that, Russia is a free enough country, especially with free internet (all this "censorship" can be easily skipped). But keep in mind that we have undeveloped or restrained social institutes, thus it may be hard to sue the state or protect one's private property.

-So, do sanctions work? I've heard your food prices keep growing.
-True, sanctions are considerable. Ruble is going down along with oil, imported food becomes more and more expensive. By rough estimation, food prices grew about 25% since 2014.

-Why do Russians hate gays so much?
-Russia is a slightly conservative country. We had no sexual revolution, feminism or gay rights movement. People aren't used to deal with open gays in particular. Moreover, TV portrays Europe as Sodom full of nasty fags continuously smooching bypassers and perverting teenagers.

-Where do I get Russian cutie?
-Definitely not in this thread.

-Why Russians are so gloomy?
-Traditionally we don't smile to strangers. A smile here may be considered as a sign of incoming fraud.
To offset it, we are very welcoming to our friends. I suppose, you will be struck by Russian hospitality.

-Why do Russians place a rug on a wall?
-In USSR carpets were in shortage and a good rug became a symbol of wealth. Also it served as isolation for sound and warmth. Nowadays this tradition is almost gone.

explain to me.
I listened to this sentence being read in yandex.ru translator:
Пpиeзжaйтe к нaм, мы тoчнo нe пocepeмcя, a ecли и тaк, тo "Bыpacтим"!

and when I listen to Пpиeзжaйтe к нaм, Пpиeзжaйтe is pronounced differently than when you say it by itself.
why?

Good header tovarish and pretty accurate.

Might just add something myself.

On houses. Rug on the wall = kitsh. The same goes for crystal dishes/glasses and stuff and also for books. Russians do keep big libraries with the books they didn't even read. All this is soviet heritage and keeps vanishing though.

On contemporary politics. Our government is currently trying to ressurect a 'soviet man' social stereotype. Hence the cold-war-tier rhetorics used in propaganda, like: "russia vs world" and "russia = superpower", the forced replacement of the imported products with local production and the censorship of public opinions. They do it pursuing the goal of making masses more controllable and de-escalating the inner tension level while the whole governmental system serves only chosen number of people at the expense of the whole country. The situation here is pretty sad and desperate, although the majority still doesn't realize this. For example, the whole office of state prosecutors is affilated with local crime leaders which murder and threaten people to take away their business, and there are many more examples.

This makes me sad as an individual, this makes me angry as a citizen, but it doesn't seem like something will be able to change peacefully, which also makes me scared

well it sounds like the тe sound is shorter.
when its just Пpиeзжaйтe by itself it sounds like pree-zhie-tyeh
but when its Пpиeзжaйтe к нaм it sounds like pree-zhie-tek-nam

fuck this nigger and fuck you OP. okay mistar? OKAY!
>>
>>51875118
I guess there's just no no distinction between long and short sounds in Russian. What you’re talking about would never ever matter in any Russian word.
>>
>>51875118
Oh, nevermind, it's not about length, you’re just supposed to reduce unstressed syllables like some languages do, so e becomes i, o becomes a etc. Look up vowel reduction.
>>
>>51875240
really?
Its just weird to me.
You do understand what I mean with this difference though?
It sounds like the тe has been separated from the rest of the word and added to the front of the к.
To me the way it sounds is like it should be written Пpиeзжaй тeк нaм which I know makes no sense, but it sounds like it is pronounced like that lmao.
>>
>>51875301
Yeah, that's completely normal. You’re not suppose to pronounce spaces haha. B пoeздe would sound like Фпoeзди for example.
