Well, my Swiss friend, that's the problem with American car culture. The average American is brainwashed to believe they need a car, or, even worse, in an area that is not served by public transport, making a car necessary.
This means that only the poorest dregs of society use the bus in many areas, because they're the only ones who can't afford or maintain a vehicle.
It would be better for all of us if we could get away from the "everyone needs a car" meme but I don't see that happening for a long time.
