Tengri edition
I1ll repost my superb linguisitic post
One of my favourite aspect of Hungarian is the faint old religious remains.
Although old Hungarian religion is not understood well and was certainly not simple Tengriism, there are some interesting relations.
Like in Tengriism, the sky occupies a central importance. Tengriists worship the eternal blue sky, called Munkh Khukh Tengri" in Mongolian. Incidentally, kék means blue in Hungarian.
While sky in our tongue is "ég" (lit. 'burning, shining'), the sea is called tenger, probably some sort of drift or extension of word meanings (of coruse the sky and sea is comparable in many ways).
The root *ten is central to Asian religions, 天, called tian in Chinese (sky), ten in Japanese (heaven) and is present in many other words concerning the heavens.
In Hungarian, we have tengely which means axis (ie axis of the world), tanító (teacher), tan (teachings, tenet, doctrine), and most importantly God, Isten, which is a composite word made from is (ancient/great, ős in modern Huingarian) and ten, the same root again.
I approve
