Why couldn't Yugoslavia just stay as one country?
I mean, it could have worked out, even without communism. A union of countries with equal status, kind of like the United Kingdom. Could have been rich and prosperous, and actually matter in Europe.
Instead, all its former federal subjects insist being irrelevant, poor little shitholes. Why is this?

We're not post-Ottoman Yugoslavs. In my eyes, all of our politicians who sought union with Serbia and Croatia were basically traitors. And this is evidenced by the fact that the Yugoslav government refused to intervene militarily/was quick to reach an unfavourable settlement for the Slovenian side in Slovenia's border disputes with Austria and Italy after each world war.
But that's not all. The Yugoslav government basically blocked the construction of highways in Slovenia for 25 years so that we wouldn't get too far ahead of Bosnia, Kosovo and Macedonia. Yugoslavia was anti-Slovenian.

tbf Macedonians are Bulgarians in denial and Slovenes consider themselves too good to stay. Other than that the remaining regions could have easily remained in Yugoslavia, but Croatians and Serbians have always been rivals of some sort despite being the same except for religion, which is probably the biggest difference between Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia. Their nationalism is basically founded on the different religions, that's why Bosnians are considered traitors up to this day.
