Started reading Keys to Drawing a few days ago so I tried to draw my headphones by following the book's advice about shapes.
I drew it on a whim before going to bed but it turned out better than I expected. As far as I can tell the lines are quite hesitant leading to chicken scratch although the author says "restating" is okay. I don't know shit about textures or shading so I just scribbled over the band but compared to the real thing I think I did a decent job in regard to the proportions.
What do you think?
>>
>>2597616

Like yeah of course your lines and stuff aren't too appealing to look at. But if you just drew that from looking at an object irl then you've got a pretty good eye for shapes.

Overlay your drawing on the picture and notice where you have gone astray, The arms in particular and some of the angles are off. Try and lay in the angles and relative positions of the body parts before drawing and see if it looks less broken.

Never thought to study drawing etc. was always just something to do. Reading up on these practices has inspired me to learn the science and it ended up shit.

God knows what I was doing with shading. Copying a reference was easier when I broke the image down into grids but I want to get efficient enough to animate. Journey starts here

It's the default fading PS brush with shape dynamics added.

In sai I would use the semi-soft pencil with min size set to ~20, and opacity set to ~70.

I seldom use pure black when I draw, if needed you can darken later by playing with contrast.

Literally my first digital painting ever. Any tips?
>>
I realized I have no focus and my art profiles on the web are a fucking mess, so I wanna start building a portfolio I can show to people without going "yeah uh that was just a sketch end this one I was doing a thing but then it turnet into another and uh this is when my tablet broke". It's time to have something solid, something I can look and say to myself "that's cool, that's my best right now". How do I realize WHAT things to start painting and posting on the internet? keeping in mind I should be able to present it to companies and shit for freelancing.

This post is kind of a nonsensical and vague question, but so are my thoughts right now. I just want a direction /ic/, the worst thing for an artist is not knowing what to do and where to go.

1: Learn to paint in greyscale before worrying about colors. Colors are complicated and not as important as values.

>>2598086
What KIND of freelancing?
Think about what kind of jobs you want to catch with your portfolio.

Nobody looking for a character designer is going to care about your perspective drawings or your comic pages or your landscapes. Nobody looking for a cartoon storybook illustrator is going to care about how good you are at drawing saggy old lady tits at your life drawing sessions.

If you don't know exactly what kind of jobs you want, figure it out. Nobody's impressed by a generalist.

It doesn't really matter what you use, I know plenty of good artists that learned on tablets.

You should draw and memorize the skeleton and muscles etc. study anatomy It will help you so much.
>>
>>2598156
One thing I should probably say is, you don't have to be a one-trick pony. You CAN do several things at once, like designing characters AND illustrating children's books AND drawing sci-fi book covers. But you need to have them in separate sections of your online portfolio so clients looking at your stuff can focus on the stuff they care about, and you need to not send clients things they don't care about when contacting them.

How many pieces are good for a portfolio? should I look for other artist's portfolios for "topic reference"?
>>
>>2597716

this helped me when I was younger: use the side of your pencil and fill in colors of grey rather than using the tip to define edges. Even if the measurements are off it won't be a symbol drawing.
>>
>>2598196
I'm no expert, but no more than 50 per category before people will get bored, I think*. But the important thing is to have it all be your best. If you've only got 20 good pieces, don't put in mediocre ones just because you want to fill space.

>should I look for other artist's portfolios for "topic reference"?
Both for ideas of how to structure your portfolio and for what kind of drawings you should put there, definitely. Hell, ask them if they can give you a few tips, worst they can do is say no.

*I really am not an expert. Craig Mullins, for instance, has over a hundred and fifty pieces in the "concept" part of his portfolio. But then, what works for a world-reknowned artist with decades of experience and connections at the top of the field might not work for you.

Nope. Think instead of copying. The core shadow needs to align with the cast shadow and the highlight is basically reflection, which means it's created by light coming from the light source, bouncing off the ball surface and going to your eyes. (pic related)
Think, don't copy.

Yes, drawing on a tilted surface to see your picture straight up is very important. Though you don't have to buy this thing, a simple wooden board in your lap resting against your table could do.

Any tutorials showing in detail how to draw legs/leg muscles?
>>
I've spent some time practicing on paper and have made some noticeable improvement and just bought a drawing tablet(wacom bamboo). After spending some time trying it out everything I draw seems to turn out far worse than it would if I'd just used pencil and paper. It feels like I'm back to almost square one, all my lines are extremely messy and imprecise and drawing anything with any amount of detail is impossible.

Is this natural and just something I'll have to work through? I don't particularly want to have to learn everything once for on paper and then again with a tablet.

You just need to get used to the tablet. Once you get coordinated, everything you learned with the pencil will carry over.

A few things anon

1) Resize your damn pics, seriously, if you want a reasonable response at least make the tiniest amount of effort to make our lives easier, or to actually be taken seriously.

2) No, they don't look 3d.

3) Are you doing this based on Han's Dynamic Sketching? If you are go and watch the lesson again. You don't understand the instructions. If you are doing this based off of some other instruction or reasoning state it so we understand what it is you are attempting to accomplish.

4) As the other anon said, your line work is pretty bad. Your lines need to be smoother and more sure. Right now they are wobbly and uncertain. They thicken and thin at seemingly random points which does no good for the drawing.

5) You've posted these several times, surely you've done many more since then. Where are those?

I recently got back into drawing and have been practicing figure drawing again for a few weeks now.
>>2598563
Maybe I am taking them too slow. I try to do it slowly so I can try to make them smooth but I guess it's not working.
>>
>>2598570
Big mistake. Slow doesnt always equal smooth sadly. Faster strokes from the shoulder or even elbow are likely going to be much smoother than lines slowly from the wrist. Also, considering you seem to have been doing it for a relatively long time, possibly change it up. Instead of cutting down on time, take as much time as needed, then post them up for critique, it might highlight things you need work on, right now they look sort of just like scribbles. Finally, try studying anatomy, sounds boring, i know.

Its not 3d, try to draw through your drawing too. What I mean I that you have to know perfeclty what your figure is like. Which means you need to know how it looks like behind the facade. For example of you draw a cube, you should be able to draw all its sides by assuming the cube is transparent

Here, I worked constuctive drawing for 2,5 years and I feel super confortable when drawing 3d stuff. And yeah, work over your lines

I've been doing life drawing and trying to see through forms, so I don't have any more of those exercises for now.

Also I'm not doing Han's Dynamic Sketching, I'm doing draw-a-box

http://drawabox.com/lesson/2

I'm not sure if I should be drawing from life or if I should be doing exercises like the one I've shown to learn more about 3D.

Ok, drawabox is a guy who took Han's course and thinks he can teach it.

I'd recommend getting peter han's dynamic sketching course and doing that instead. Similar stuff, much better teacher.

You should be doing both drawing from life and form exercises.

If it works for you it works. Personally I feel that starting off with traditional stuff taught me a lot more about confidence and also how to work with mistakes, because I can't just ctrl z until I get everything perfect. Also doesn't give me the luxury of layers or lasso tool or easily manipulating something that was close but not quite right. If you fuck it up in traditional your only option is to fix it, you can't just lasso it and resize/skew it until it looks better.

Also I can bring a sketchbook and a pencil/pens everywhere. My tablet needs power, or will eventually run out of battery.

But that's just my own experiences, maybe someone who's actually good can chime in.

Question: is it a bad idea to try to improve in too many areas at once?
Going over the things I've practiced in the last week, I notice there's little rhyme or reason to it. Gesture drawing one day, photo study the next, color study, line study, pen control exercises, painting from imagination, and facial expressions.
This is a really bad idea, isn't it? How long should I try to focus on a single subject?

If plain scales are getting boring, maybe you need to apply what you've practiced by drawing some simple shapes and shading them. Cylinders are a good shape to practice with, since you need to have both sharp and soft transitions.

I'd suggest focusing on your anatomy and drawing skills before you get into color. Good color is nice, but it's wasted effort if the underlying drawing isn't capable of standing on its own.
I think a 10/1 ratio of practice would be good - for every ten line drawings you do, you pick one to add colors to.

More concrete advice; try to focus on making your strokes long and even strokes for your lines and use a bigger brush when coloring.

Did you spend half an hour as mandated in the exercise on this? Really take a look at the wide range of values in the drawing. The hair is very dark and most of the skin is pretty much completely white. There's a lot of variety of tone between those two.
I personally just finished that exercise too, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but when you do the exercises you should really put your all into it. I tend to kinda half-ass the exercises somewhat in order to progress quicker, but I realise that it's really by doing the exercises while thinking about what you're doing and trying your absolute best that you actually get better.
I'd say go back and try some of the older exercises again while really thinking about what you're drawing and what you're trying to learn with each attempt, and also actively avoid any tendency to symbol-draw.
I think shading is really fucking hard, did you do the tonal bar?

As for my own attempt, yeah the line quality is absolute shit, I half-assed it even though I knew I shouldn't. Fucked up several times with the overall outline of the shapes. No excuses, just gotta keep trying.
>>
>>2599254
>gets told to go to the beginner thread
>actually does it
Hey, that's a good start.

Anyway, I'll just take things from the top.

I have no idea where the light is supposed to be coming from.
The hair is a black mass without depth. There's no difference in how the inside of it is being lit, compared to the outside. It also seems like there's a lot more hair on one side of her head than the other.

Is she supposed to have fur or skin? One of her cheeks has tufts of fur coming out of it, while the other is shaded like it's completely smooth. Similar issues abound on the rest of her skin (or fur or whatever).

Like >>2599266 said, the way her top is portrayed doesn't make any sense. It's clinging tightly to the underside of her breast despite being loose on her back. Did she stick it on with glue? Unless there's some shenanigans going on, it should be hanging straight down. If you want to have the top hang loose but still show off her breasts, consider adding a back light shining through the fabric.

Speaking of breasts, those don't make sense either. Like with the top, there seems to be an invisible force pushing them together. Instead of having a Y-shaped fold in the cleavage, that area should concave, with the breasts falling out to the sides a bit.

There's not enough room between the crotch and the bottom of the abdominal muscles. There's usually about as far between the bellybutton and the crotch as there is between the bellybutton and the nipples.

I don't know about your construction process but right now I think you should just focus on getting the measurements correct. See the cheek and the width of her eye sockets.

As for the values, they are still a bit too unclear on some parts. Pick only few values and stick with them until you've blocked the shapes in, then you can smoothen the edges. You could also try a marker and just use single color on white paper like >>2598856.

Any general tips? I'd like to be less messy, is there a good way to fill in those large black areas quickly without scribbling wildly using a regular pencil, or should I just suck it up and do them more carefully / use cross-hatching?

Grab your pencil near the back end, lay it nearly flat against the paper, and wipe it back and forth.

The left eye looks pretty accurate but overall the measurements don't match that well. Here's the original picture with max contrast.

Alright, I've tried this before but couldn't quite get those deeper shades with it. I guess I ought to simply buy a softer pencil for shading. Thanks!

Can someone please draw over where her pelvis and femur would be? I'm trying to get good at visualizing people's skeletons. Is this woman too THICK for a beginner? Excuse the mspaint.

This is why I draw with a black pen. You should try it.

Yeah that's a good idea actually. Time to hit the art-supply store.
>>
>>2599684
no you got it
>>

The femur's further into the leg, but if you aren't thinking of depth then I think you got it about right.

It's Proko(penko)

Should I avoid mechanical pencils and just focus on using a number two pencil? Should I buy a pack of the pencils with different hardnesses?

please give me anatomy critique

Practise gesture first, helps you get a feel for the movement of the figure and make the drawing more dynamic and energetic.

Would anyone mind giving me proper critique besides Loomis? Everyone else I talk to keeps being an asshat.

draw nude models and actually draw the bones, not just cylinders. the orientation of the chest and pelvis are wrong, head too big. draw the hands dummy

I also didn't enjoy Loomis' teaching style. Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing is much better to begin with imo because it teaches you how to see and think when drawing rather than how to draw in a particular style. It's more open to your own personal interpretation of the world, but it still teaches you the fundamentals that should go into all types of drawings.
Right now what you're drawing is not your own style, it's an amalgamation of various eyes, hair, ears etc. that you have learned from other artists and pieced together without truly knowing HOW they fit together. In order to draw for example a cartoon nose you should learn how to draw a real nose and how to place it on any face at any angle, and then you simplify that in your own style.

Those weren't 5 minutes. Those literally took me forever to draw.
