How and why do you people listen to things that require concentration like podcasts? I can barely listen to music without losing focus. You can't concentrate on two things at once, your brain won't let you, it's literally impossible.

>>2570143
This in particular. What the hell is wrong with you?
>>
I don't listen if I am drawing and concentrating.

I do listen if I am drawing aimlessly or seeking inspiration.

When you're trying to come up with a picture sure, you need to focus there, but there is a lot of low concentration work involved with art. Particularly if you do a lot of stuff like inking and coloring, though even painting after the first hour or two is just grinding and you can sit back and listen to something as you grind away.

Not trolling, but if that was true, wouldn't it be impossible to play a instrument and sing at the same time?
>>
>>2570132

It depends on what phase of work I am in. I can listen to podcasts while rendering or doing repetitive simple tasks that requires less involvement of the intellectual faculties (i.e. I can do it on autopilot more or less) but usually I cycle different playlists when I'm in a flow state. If i am doing something that is too difficult to allow me to get into a flow state I don't have any music on. But even so I've found that podcasts can really drain your energy.

I've also experimented with listening to asmr videos and while they are pleasureable they make me drowsy to the point of sometimes having to take a nap.
>>
>>2570132
fashist podcasts.

Some people are better at multitasking than others, but it's still true that you can't focus one more than one thing. I listen to music just so there's some noise and possibly something upbeat that keep the motivation up. I don't focus on the lyrics or the chords.

>I can barely listen to music without losing focus
You must be mentally handicapped in some way or have underdeveloped handwriting/pen-handling skills if that is indeed the case.

>You can't concentrate on two things at once
This is true, but with sufficient practice, you won't need to concentrate on one of those two things to be able to do it. Things like walking, writing, and typing for example.
>>
>>2571062
I should also mention, for most podcasts like >>2571041
it is enough to simply listen and apply ones language processing faculties, but for others like >>2570143, Benjamin Walker's Theory of Everything, and The Moth, you also need to visualize and conjure images. If you are listening to these kinds of podcasts while drawing then you are literally trying to do many things at once with your imagery-related mental faculties, which has it's obvious drawbacks (unless you're literally mentally special or a savant in some way, in which case you most likely have other problems)
>>
I listen to the JRE podcast, Sleepycabin, and occasionally the bombcast. When I'm out of podcasts, I'll listen to audiobooks (LotR at the moment) or music. I hate working in silence.
>>
Depends on what I'm doing but I'm constantly blasting some tunes while practising.

>chill mode
Bonobo/sun araw/electric moon/earth/sun o)))

>wanna get shits done mode
The dillinger escape plan/iron maiden/queens of the stone age/clutch

>fuck my shits up mode
Ufomammut/black metal/doom metal

Bonus point for pink floyd. Works with all categories mentioned above.

There are valid studies to show true multitasking impossible, and listening to something unless your not paying attention to it or its true bg noise will cause you no be as focused on your work.Even Richard Williams had a huge thing about this in his book.

Thing is though it's gonna be dreadfully boring to be 100 percent focused on your art for 8-`12 hrs a day.The amount that you lose by multi-tasking may be worth making the whole process more enjoyable.
>>
>>2571062

So unless you zone out the postcast, you need to put your art on autopilot.
This probably isn't a problem for stuff like mindless rendering, but even if you're good you should be trying to think about what you're doing when you're drawing, that goes double for if you're practicing.
>>
>>2571165
>The amount that you lose by multi-tasking may be worth making the whole process more enjoyable.

This is what it amounts to for me. I think anybody trying to maximize efficiency / really focus on a part should pause their music, but advocating for never listening to music while doing art is a little silly.
If you can stick with it for longer and get less impatient the benefits of you actually enjoying yourself probably outweigh the drawbacks of you being slightly distracted.

Still, to minimize distraction music without lyrics or lyrics in a language you don't speak is ideal. Even if you're not paying attention to the podcast/music, part of your brain is recognizing it's English and generally sussing it out.

idk dude im drawing sinse 2006 and working as artist and always listen to music or podcasts or watching movie on a portative DVD player.
I've met a few people complaining just like you with arguments "HOW a person can concentrate on a drawing IF THERE IS A NOISE :(".
dude you probably has mental problems with brain or some shit. Most of people watch movies or listen to music when they drawing.

I've been recently playing various animated movies on my other monitor, mostly Disney classics, for motivation and background noise.

Also, World of Warcraft full soundtrack is almost 600 tracks long and is great for mostly slow ambiance music.

In general, though, I don't like to listen to something fast paced because I feel like it also makes my strokes too hasty.
>>
>>2573676
It makes sense for animating, where your inner clock MUST be in sync with what you're doing.

Even Glen Keane said that he will listen to music, but only once he gets to the cleanup phase where he doesn't have to think anymore.

I without a doubt learned more and got more out of the classes when i drew and listened at the same time, and the teachers saw it too.
