>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Start with shapes, then add form with construction. Correct your construction by observing the shapes. You should be thinking of both shape and constructions/forms at the same time, and alternate between them

The symbol eyes are the biggest issue, they have no depth in both shading and emotion. With the hidden eye, try adding a hint of the eyebrow like

For the circled part, the misplaced muscle is very distracting. The bump would be a bit below her armpit.

Also made this.

Best I can do when trying to draw hills covered in trees from far away. Obviously struggling with the shading. I try to separate dark and light areas, but should I discern between shadow & light areas and actual content areas, like spruce trees making darker patches than leaf trees?

Shadow and light suggests the form of the hills, so when I treat different patches of trees in the same way as shadow and light it fucks with the form.

Focus on the bigger picture before moving to details.

The head does wrap around yes, but you aren't thinking in 3d - the eye sockets (among other things on the face) have depth.

They are pointing out a particularly overused design trope (especially if your character acts anything like Ramona from Scott pilgrim). Be mindful of the trope while you make your character so you don't end up with something cliche and trite
>>
>>2565130
Prob too much contour - less is more. Meaning that you should try to have each line drawn with a purpose. For this you don't need contours, also it should help reduce chicken scratching if you are more deliberate with your lines
>>
>>2564546
>Drawing is so frustrating when you have barely any talent for it!

Here's your 5th (You).
You limit ourself if you believe that a lack of talent can hold you back.
I believe in Talent as a pursued interest.
Talent in a particular area is no more than a brain that’s been deliberately developed in a specific direction, optimised for a specific set of skills.

Will learning how to draw figures help me with drawing cartoon characteristics?
Or if I'm already shit at cartoony stuff, do I not have hope?
>>
How do you deal with the way mistakes add up when you're doing studies? Especially as a beginner, when I'm trying to replicate figures or faces, I get one line wrong, then use it as a reference for another line, which is also slightly off, etc. By the end, my portrait study looks like I'd tried to draw my subject as an acid attack victim.

>>
Still a bit of a beginner, but has anyone else gone through a depressive period where drawing and nothing in general interests you. I still love the satisfaction and joy of drawing, but it seems like it is getting harder to pick up the pencil.
>>
>>2564733
Spend more time making sure the proportion/spacing is correct. It seems like you have a tendency to squash the figure's torso and pelvis together. Also try to use more hard edges and straight lines in your gestures. You lose the feeling of impact when you primarily use curves.
>>2564953
I think that you simplified the shapes to the point that you lost the likeness. It seems like you're focusing too much on the contour and forgetting the shapes they define. Try to be more specific when you're laying out your shapes.
>>
>>2565388
I'd say to fix what you're going through because the way you put it it seems like that's the bigger issue. If you do and drawing is still melancholic then you might be doing too many soulless studies and less of things you want to do.
>>

Ideal Proportion, Male - Sketch.png

I'm on Loomis' figure drawing book right now and I'm trying to get this proportion down. How's my process? I start with a skeleton frame like the one from Fun With a Pencil, then add the "meat", then pen it in so the two are easily distinguished.

Any tips at this point would be greatly appreciated because right now I'm planning to make 50 or so more of these per angle (6 in total, male & female), or how many it takes to reproduce these things from memory with correct proportion.

Also the drawing should not look this scratchy at all, these photos take up 4 mb each and every time I scale it down it looks like hell
>>

Good on you for studying Loomis, its mostly boring but you soon learn what a master draftsman he was by copying his drawings. As for your copy, it looks pretty good aside from the calves (they're a bit short and stubby). You mentioned you want to copy it repeatedly, but don't be afraid to move onto the mannequin figure in chapter 1 (a simplification of the human form that would be easier to replicate to really memorize those proportions). Also, supplicate your loomis with other stuff - Hampton, Bridgeman, anything that interests you. Loomis is brilliant but he's stuck in the 50s and can get rather dry if you try to cram it all at once.

As for the pen question, inking your drawings can be great practice for line weight/control, so I don't see it as a waste of time.

don't abandon your stylised work for studies and don't abandon your studies for your style. do both, but at first your time spent studying should be trying to represent reality as it is (i.e. realism) then once you get a good grasp on that, start blending in some of your style into your studies.

i'd say 85% studies to 15% imagination is a good ratio for when you're starting out and working on fundamentals. but once you've got those bases to a good level (probably after a year or so depending on how hard you work), go ahead and make it 50/50

Good job on your work anons, you'll only ever get better. Go ahead and try this, and if you can, draw a vertical line and horizontal line through the middle of it and divide it into 4 quadrants. Then do the same on your paper. It helps a lot with construction and proportion in the beginning.

Seriously though, I did this as a break from draw-a-box exercises and I decided to do it without construction or auxiliary lines of any kind, just to see if I could get around by paying attention to the spacing between lines and things like that. Didn't go great, I don't think I need to say that, but one thing that really annoyed me, was that I could never place him right within the frame, any tips on that? Doing this without auxiliary lines feels batman.

Personally, I'd try to imitate Bernie Wrightson/Franklin Booth/Nico Delort style of hatching. Using slightly varied, in direction and density, patches of hatch, that would generally flow with the volume of the hill, switching to lines and beelines for light and volume further in distance.
>>
>>2566520
What about it is symbolic though?
>>
>>2566539
Which parts, I mean.
>>
>>2566539
Fucking everything. You're clearly not drawing what you're seeing because there's a mix of varying distances in every picture. Take your time next time.

Have a look at this >>2565113
>>
>>2566546
I'm not drawing what I'm seeing because I literally cannot draw what I see, my lines aren't very good at all yet, so when I want to make the squiggly line that makes the top of the eye, I may know what line I want, but it often comes way off. I did simplify the lens of the glasses, because I couldn't get the tight shapes needed to make it look decent, so I simply tried to roughly place the ellipses according to the line of the nostril and the second line of the mouth (the one going slightly down; and the pupils I didn't pay much attention to either. The beard, I didn't really know what to do with, since I can't shade properly yet, but that was not at all what I wanted to take from this.

I simply cannot believe "everything" is symbol drawn, when I don't remember a line that I treated singularly, with nothing more than respect for other lines already in the drawing.

>mix of varying distances in every picture.

I still don't get how my eyes are symbols. I mean, maybe I'm looking at this wrong, but I seriously was not drawing eyes when I was drawing the eyes. My thought process for these is demonstrated on the image. The arrows represent the distances I checked, while the other colors represent the shapes and lines I tried to make. Yes, I know I didn't check every distance I should've (like the space between the triangle of the eyelashes and the eye), but is that really symbol drawing?

And as I said, I didn't use construction on purpose, I stated it clearly, it was simply something I did to train my eye measurements a bit, that's why I didn't really ask for opinions on that, because I am not planning on doing anything actually serious without construction.

But now I really am curious if I am symbol drawing.

>don't draw with such thick lines
I mean, I only used one pen, unless you're talking about the example, but that was just to explain how I was thinking about it. I could do one with thinner lines if you want...

> and try zooming in / drawing bigger
The only reason I did those frames is because I know I have trouble with placing my subject, which is what I asked for help on. It was just an exercise to try and keep everything orderly.

>study pic related and this
My intention was never to learn how to draw an eye with this, the eye was just an example; and wouldn't that kind of contradict what you were saying? Why would studying eyes help me if I'm not trying to draw an eye, but those specific shapes and lines? My intention was to try to decide which lines were more important to the drawing, and mark them to the best of my abilities, similar to how they are in the photo.

Am I being a dumb here?

the fact that you're actively trying to not do it is great, but it's a big step for artists to make, and not easy. you seem to know the theory so consciously being aware of it and drawing a lot (!!!) is really all you can do
>>
>>2566723
Yes, you do. Whether you're just starting out or 5 years down the line, you need people to tell you you're bad. That way you never stop improving, you will keep striving to get better and fix your mistakes. If people just tell you you're good, then you'll start stagnating.

Have you memorized the construction? Can you draw one in many angles? You need to do that first.

What I do is I start with the simple loomis head, and make sure the proportions are correct. Then I do the planes of the face, Including two spheres for the eyes and a rounded shape for the mouth. Then I do the actual details on top of it. It's easier to deal with on a tablet since you have layers, if on paper, make sure you're drawing very light, you're going to be erasing a lot.
