This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.
Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, hands aren't important!

you gotten much better
Posted this at the end of the last thread. I tried nudging the eyes and nose a bit. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
>>2545816
forgot to post lel, just recieved my figma figure, first time using it, damn life is easier
>>2545826
Completely redraw that nose. It just looks weird and off. Eyes are too close together. The mouth is okay I suppose.
>>2545826
try to flip the canvas horizontally to be able to see the problems with the face better
Not sure yet if I want to do a simple coloring (then I might refine the lines) or if I want to do a painting.
(redlines are always appreciated)
>>2545858
Fack forgot to add pic.
Anatomy and perspective is fucked but cbf correcting it.

figma archetype she, got it from china, the stand didn't match, but w/e, fixed it
>>2545898
Damn, that's a pretty nice figure. I would buy one but no money, aha. Hope you have fun with it, bud! I'm sure it's a lot of help.
the gesture has me pretty stumped atm, would appreciate some help
>>2545927
both feet should be turned out for balance, the left foot (her right foot) should be turned outwards.
fuck 2 days that i unlearned to draw...
Help...
Can't complete anything
Can't make a line like i want
Why?
any suggestions to how to fix the legs? (especially the left leg, it looks pretty skewed after staring at the sketch for a while)
>>2545927
>>2545990
that's super cute, anon.
I think the right leg might be a bit too chubby compared to the left one?
(and: blog?)
>>2545990
Try and imagine the bone in her leg, I think the foot needs to be straightened out a bit, there's too much of an angle.
>>2545989
anxiety?
anyway, remember that the hat needs to fit her head. Good luck man, just keep drawing~
>>2545989
I know that problem with the lines. Maybe try to find another brush setting that works for you?
How big is the canvas you're working on? You could try to work on a bigger one and zoom out more.
slowly rendering
>>2546009
Sorry anon, no blog. Also, noted!
>>2546013
Is this alright?
>>2546028
looks good so far.
But be careful for your values.
>>2545927
perspective isn't pushed enought, proportions remain the same as a frontal pose with no distorsion
legs are not pointing to the pov, so she's falling down, no leg ahead
>>2546036
looking cute~
i'd try slimming down her legs
>>2546046
Witches are fun to draw in general, anon.
Also it's really interesting to make different interpretations of what a witch could look like.
>>2546029
Yeah, maybe just move the knee over a bit, if you're struggling just draw a line where you think the bones with be roughly.
>>2546034
thanks for the advice. when i get the shape of everything down i'm going to push the values a lot more. this is my first time every painting anything like this so i'm learning a lot from it.
>>2546054
I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the help, anon.
>>2546049
now I want to draw a witch too, but I guess I'm stuck with my picture for tonight.
How is this?
>>2545541
i get that it's supposed to be murky as hell, but you've tipped the balance to not intelligible from any sort of distance. gotta push the light until you get at least some read from the thumbnail.
on the line of minor nitpicks:
) i'd curl her fingers under the leg more.
) really pushing the light as it reflects off his face/ribcage will help make it more ominous - doing so in a warmer light than what you got might make it seem more intimate in its creepiness.
) adding a touch of dying red-orange embers to your little side-bowls might look good.
>>2546110
i like the drawing, but the colours are very dull. the colouring has a muddiness to it, i think you could benefit from using sharper values when rendering. instead of working directly with colour, try rendering in grayscale and then adding colour on to that.
wip
>>2546131
You need to practice your hands more m8. There is something going on those fingers
>>2546115
did a quick adjustment layer tweak to show what i'm talking about.
>>2546131
>Those hands
>>2546144
How do you get those lines to fade out into a nice thin one? Whenever I try to do it my lines are either fat or thin. Yes I am using Pen Pressure.
>>2546166
don't underestimate fixing it line weight yourself with careful use of eraser.
>>2546173
Thanks, now I feel retarded for not thinking of that.
>>2546137
thx senpai
saving it, really need to catch those contrasts, really gj, liking the fire pots
will apply myself with to push that rendering :8
btw wip update
i feel like the hat is still wrong, but is it wrong enough for an average viewer to notice? also any general crits please.
>>2546189
no prob. nice and ambitious work. when you're doing full illustrative pieces remember to zoom way out now and then to gauge how the thumbnail is reading. helps you stay on track for the whole picture.
>>2546141
You insult the ok hands and miss the mutant toes...
>>2546198
fan is wrong too i'm pretty sure, so any help with that would be a++
>>2546018
may be...
but also my motivation goes...
i used to enter some kind of "trance"
the same feeling you get when you play rythm games...
But now... nothing i can't do shit without that concentration...
>>2546116
Thanks, the initial sketch has some values, it's just that I'm really messy while painting especially at the beginning.
>>2546266
the "trance" you're seeking is called flow
>>2546277
yeah that was the name
The same when i play airsoft or music...
goddamnit i'm worthless without it
>>2546131
Are you a pro? This looks clean and simple enough to be a webtoo .
>>2546131
Everything besides the digits, fucking great mang, love it.
>>2546268
That looks much better.
>>2546131
I think there's something not right with the hips. Like with that angle of her shoulders the hips would tilt the other way. However then you wouldn't see her rear so I can understand choosing to leave that.
Her right arm seems like a twisted noodle. Having her arm twisting that far inward seems really too unnatural anyways.
And yeah, squiggly noodle fingers.
color scheme y/n?
Did the OP draw that OP image because lol its fucking trash.
>>2546388
this would look neat if the girl didn't look like a gremlin/trollface, but I really like how you muh-style'd the clothes in any case
>>2546028
Mind sharing how you go about making something like this? Like, references, sketching, and do you always place color down before getting into a variety of values?
>>2545864
damn, like the style.
Blog?
>>2546434
thx. i'm trying to get kind of vaguely ukiyo-e touch to the kind of tumblr-esque standardized cartoon style.
Anything need fixing before I progress?
>>2546528
Ambitious, but hugely wrong. Stand similarly in front of a door mirror and look at how the shoulders, ribcage, and pelvis overlap.
very wip
working from the focal point out
having trouble making this palette/comp work... there's probably something wrong/off about it but it's hard to pinpoint bc ive been staring at it for so long
just wanted to get some fresh eyes on it and see if anyone has any advice/feedback
>>2546437
i started painting over a quick sketch because before i always pussied out of using photoshop and it got out of hand. i don't really know what i'm doing, i'm just adding components on different layers and building it up piece by piece so that i can adjust any mistakes i make easily. i should have defined my values beforehand, it makes lineartless painting way easier.
>>2546578
the stairs are sorta fucked up.
particularly the handrail to the back.
>>2546608
Bottom of the stair posts are at one angle, and the stairs behind are at another, i think.
>>2545965
>>2546036
quickly roughing out some small changes before I go to work, is this any better? I shifted the upper body's porpotions very slightly and turned the feet out.
>>2546000
can't say i'm a fan of this change, it looks a bit too similar to the blue demon loli i did previously, sorry...
>>2546557
I wasn't trying to make the otherstuff overlap, but the head is too high right? So I need to bring it lower. Like the chin should be lower than the where the collar bones meet? its supposed to be straight on with the head bowed down.
You don't have to tell me the hands suck, I know already, I haven't gotten to hands yet for studying anatomy. Still, I wanted to complete it anyway.
critique for gesture, construction, and lineart in particular would be appreciated

You can also adjust the density of the brush based on pressure and velocity, so faster and lighter strokes makes the line more faded.

>>2547289
There's no obvious place for the sheath to be, like it's floating? and it feels just a bit too low to the hip. Bring it up a bit, along with the arm.
>>2547289
Your issue is largely a value and readability one. Just clean up your shapes and values and it will start to look better. I did a quick paintover, but it's done with my trackpad on my laptop so is not very precise. I made some slight modifications to the proportions too.
did what I could for the time being, I feel like I messed up more than I should have. Probably will be able to work on it with a fresh pair of eyes tomorrow.
>>2547166
Got it, thanks. Some good ref in there.
>>2547231
The position of the shoulder muscles throw me off quite often sometimes, I'll work on them...
>>2547289
I don't know what your workflow is like but it seems to me you went to paint too quickly.
For your skill level it'd be much easier to do a fleshed out line drawing/sketch to work out all the anatomy, proportion and design. Then go over that on a new layer with a slightly more detailed line drawing, then go to paint. It seems like you're trying to render but you don't have the costume parts worked out so large portions of your design become a scribble mess because you're trying to render and draw at the same time.
Working everything up in shapes is a totally valid way of working but at lower skill levels is going to be much more frustrating because the initial shapes will probably be incorrect. You'll be wrestling fixing the big shapes while also getting bogged down in adding all the little details and shit.
Photo attached is an example of how I work, in case my explanation doesn't make sense.
Just keep working on your anatomy and drawing from life in conjunction with working on this imaginative work. I like the owl face on his breastplate that's a cool idea/design. Try and repeat it more on his armor or use other owl related design influence on his gear. Right now it's just this one owl head on his armor and it's not clear why it's there.
>>2547090
I always get a kick out of how you smuggle your fetish with giant muscle lolis destroying cities into full illustrative pieces.
It's like spotting Quentin Tarantino's clinging shots of womens' feet, only so much more obsessively specific.
You do you, you bizarre little fella. You do you.
>>2547121
Stage-right leg, shin's a bit off. It should have more of an outside curve. Trace the tibia from kneecap to talus. Also, unless the boots are supposed to have a slight slant, I don't think the line of the pants into the boot would be so horizontal to the ground. Already looks just fine for any normie, though. Really like how you rendered the coat hem and sash, it's got noticeable thickness and weight over the coat.
thx to both
>>2547393
'problem causing' workflow, didn't follow my own this time, I took this initial sketch >>2547165
and tried to recycle it so it's not old and skinny, while growing chaos, at some point I used liquify to resize, wrong, and fucked up forms/perspective
Yep, trying to do shapes without solid ground is a mess, it all started out with a suit that didn't show any anatomy, so I didn't work on the figure enought, then turned out I need it because of the plot twist :/
Liking your shot a lot, nice owls
left harm is no mayor concern... but legs/foot is the worst thing I did, holy shit, heels are ahead of the chin, gotta plan the underdrawing tomorrow :/
>>2547313
thanks, those are way better values! I really went so wrong on this one
Help me with this gynoid
>>2547478
Another trackpad paintover so not too precise....you arre underestimating how much the nose protrudes as a form off the face. Try to respect general proportions too even if it is stylized.
>>2547459
Your welcome.
Yeah I noticed after I posted that you had done a more line based sketch that was of the older man. Taking that route will be a lot less frustrating, as your skills improve and things come easier it's not as hard to cut out steps or go right into paint from a minimal sketch.
That image you posted is pretty close to how I work, it might be slower than just going right to paint but I like the end product better.

speaking of, i'm thinking of going for a semi-rendered look rather than full cel shading, though i'll probably do something different for the skin. any thoughts appreciated.
>>2547631
Yeah, I meant your original style.
If you need some inspiration for coloring look into screenshots of Shuji Teriyama movies, especially "Pastoral". Maybe this will give you some ideas.
>>2547625
Looks much better, getting the drawing back in there is making the costume read much better. That should be a pretty decent sketch to draw over and work out all the costume bits.
>>2547515
You seem to be coming at it from the wrong motivation. Youy'll get good eventually if you just keep working and doing studies to work on what you suck at. Doesn't seem healthy to judge your work on weather or not it impresses people, that day (depending on where you're at) could be years down the road.
And who cares is IC is impressed, normies should be the people you're looking to entice, they have cash to spend. (I.E. you're kickstarting an art or sketchbook and need people to buy it.)
>>2547090
I thought it looked familiar
I reverse image searched that before, but I don't think anything came up

the shading really pops when it comes to the sword girl. I like it. But yeah as someone mentioned, the wrist with the sword is too bent. The pink hair girl's leg seems to start from her stomach, either that or her torso seems really short.
>>2548178
y does she have a smile on her belly?
Can't unsee a happy face on her torso.
collar bones are like like a byciclle handle
tits are not spheres, it's fat and it's subject to gravity
doingone of the leg's with the socket oval in ithe opposite way, as the leg is going forward, would make it less stiff
belly buttom is too low
her curves are so simplified, I can count 3 curves on her side..

>>2548231

>>2548238
I understand it's a caricature, but you stylized it in a way that it loses the likeness of the actual person. A good caricature still has likeness because it emphasizes or exaggerates a person's features. Your actual person has a nose that is quite hooked and pretty "flat" and droopy. You did try to get it to look aquiline, but instead of emphasizing that the nose is flat, you made it come forward from the face. Another thing that I would have emphasized is his mouth; it's relatively small and he is thin-lipped, your mouth is very big.

look specfically at the ones im flagging and put them in a folder. keep the ones im not flagging and put those in another folder. Compare both. If you don't see it right away, as you improve youll come to understand.
Generic manga... I tried :(
>>2548634
she got a swol ass neck
cute style tho. maybe move the right eye a little closer to the nose. body wise, id sketch out the whole body and crop before drawing the head alone. makes it easier to see what looks iffy.
these are doodles. may turn the robo girl into an actual piece but less kancolle'ish.
>>2548641
Thanks. Is this better now (neck)?
Is it mandatory to separate in a lot of layers when painting (one for hair, one for skin, one for cloth etc etc)??
>>2548677
use the sticky, you're not even trying to construct, your lacking underdrawing, you're trying to go straight to final lines
you need ground
>>2548691
Thanks mate
>>2548398
I quite like how you intepreted her leggings, I hope you won't mind if I borrow a bit from those.
>>2548312

>>2548752
What is she grabbing?
>>2548777
My heart
any suggestion?
btw keep doing this fellas
>>2548840
Anime/alternative Group pic
anybody who wants can draw a character and add it to the group
Bonus if you do something that interact with other's characters
(For example, you can make another zombie who push my loli while she is being pulled or make someone massage the guy on the left)
>>2548842
I might do this, but I haven't drawn in almost 2-3 months and I'm hating myself more than usual because of it.
this might be the start of a new fetish...
>>2548879
keep using those sketches, add a new layer and over it draw with diferent line colors:
1 bone structure, use another artist studys as reference if it's simple and well done.
2 cut the forms like you're using a knife, draw the ovals surrounding the skin
3 set a point around every figure and calculate the light source form there and how the shadows would be formed (sun like, close source, down, side, back.. and use it as a close light source)
Don't worry about doing it wrong, worry about doing it.
>>2548879
Yeah I busted like 5 nuts
>>2548879
do this on all the lolis
I fucked this up somehow and don't know what exactly I did wrong, please help
>>2548956
oooohh!
Thanks!
also got some confidence!
Since i didn't recognize at first i tought "woah that is good he even bothered to redraw it"
Nosebro might getting a rival senpai!
>>2548956
like this?
>>2548958
boobs are a bit too high, head possibly too big.
>>2548691
I thought I could start by the end lines but I was wrong. I will have to learn construction.
In you experience which book is better to learn construction Loomis or Bridgman? (Other good sources also asked)
>>2548978
keep going like that, move the light source
do bone structure first, don't do bones with straight lines, alternate lines like ( ) ( )
close the forms at the border of the figure, the right leg contourn do not start to go down
always frame articulations with those ovals, to separate basic forms like the arm parts in two cilinders and the articulation
>>2545826
Colored?
>>2549051
is this supposed to be meme material
>>2548634
fucking hate you so much kronfag. I know you're the one who framed me.
>>2549051
im so fucking sorry anon
>>2549094
What tha fuck do you mean? Frame with what?
Kronfag? What tha fuck is that?
>>2549051
shouldve checked the facial proportions or asked for a redline before you colored it. You can still go back and redo it.
>>2549148
Sad part is that I did. I even got two redlines in the previous thread. I just have to turn off the animes and study more Loomis for ten more years.
>>2549221
>Mfw He would rather watch anime than study Loomis
Disgusting.
Don't worry man just harmelss teasing. Your character there is pretty..uh 'edgy' though.
>>2549221
>>2549281
Forgot to add the pic I drew. Fucks sakes.
>>2549285
LMAO
>>2549295
>gay with his big brother.
what?
anyway, always do the classic flipadoo to see if something looks off (flipping horizontally)
The face seems to be floating, not really attached to the contour of the head. I sketched you an example (not the best but hope it does the job). Do you get what I mean?
>>2549302
Yeah, thank you showing me. I realize with looking at that, that I was lining things up more so "under" the center line instead of in the middle.
>>2548270
Thanks, I knew it wasn't just me. I gave him a prominent nose and cheekbones, but wondered if the nose was too much. Here I gave him a nose job lol, I think it looks a lot better.
Disregarding the original pic and looking at the drawing alone, let me know if anything else sticks out.
>>2549302
can i example your example?
>>2549334
yea go ahead
i drew a sheep today
>>2547625
it might be personal preference, but i think you need to simplify and clarify the design and outfit. there's a lot goin on but none of it seems to mean anything, and as a silhouette it's just a rectangle. i would finish it up, and in the future play around a bit more in the thumbnailing or sketch stage to find something a little more interesting and meaning in the design.
i liked it better when it was an old man (>>2547165) because it was sort of wispy and flowy and that said a bit about his character, so try and capture a but more of that in the future
>>2549355
>3000x3000
Fuck me I'll repost this.
>>2549356
gesture feels a bit wonky, but i'm not sure what about it is funny; thoughts?
