I like the coloring but the woman's waist and whole leg area is fucked perspective wise, the man's gun (I'm not joking) looks like a sharp flat dick and his gun looks a little too simplistic. The background is criminally empty too, half of the image shouldn't be empty space

I don't know how to do this man. Not sure how to go from greyscale to color.

No, it looks close to white. Tone down the highlights and tighten up on reflections if it's glossy.

No it looks like a light grey colour. To make it look black you need to restrict the value range on it a lot more.

You've picked a really tricky thing though--painting a black object against a night sky.

I tried a paintover to show one possible solution, which is to create some colour contrast by making the sky a dark blue, then using rimlights to keep the shapes visible since it is dark on dark. It's not the best solution probably, but try out things to see how you can maintain contrast while keeping the suit darker.

Paintover was done with a trackpad on a laptop btw, so that's why it's so sloppy.

Okay I found an example of a dark on dark like you have that uses a more elegant solution. You'll see how the background is pure black, then the suit has a lighter value but it is still very dark. You need really solid value restraint to pull this off, but it can look good. The issue though is that Hale's painting has a lot of very bright areas with more skin and stuff, and that's part of what makes it work. you have most of the image taken up by the black suit, so it will be harder to pull off well.

Anyways, point is there are multiple ways you can approach it.

Holy shit thanks Anon. That helps a lot. How did you go about painting over that? Did you put the layer on a special setting? I've been trying but I can't make it look that good. I'm hoping to not have to completely repaint those dark parts cause I'm in a pinch with time.
>>2537311
I normally love this technique (I think its called caravaggio?) but for this painting I just really want all the muscles to stick out as much as I can so I would like to avoid the darks disappearing.
>>
>>2537870
I'm glad the paintover helped. If there's some lighter buildings behind then it should work better.

To darken an entire area without losing the form and values you put there, use a layer set to Multiply. You may need to play with how opaquely you paint or what colour you put on top until it looks good, but it should be fairly straight forward to figure out.

As for the technique, I guess it would be Chiaroscuro that you are thinking of, which is a technique famously employed by the artist Caravaggio.

There's different ways to go about it. But the eyes are usually a dark local colour so it would probably be okay to just make it solid black except for a highlight with some texture there. I tried a quick paintover on how I would do it, but of course it's just one option.

I need help guys. I can't get a single environmental pic to look or feel right, and they all seem to suffer from the same issues that I cant pinpoint myself. I JUST remembered that focal points were a thing but there's more glaring problems there. My perspective is pretty weak but even after many studies I can never quite get the feeling of 3D space/depth in it, and eventually I just hit a roadblock where I don't know what to do anymore and I give up. I've even picked up a few 3d programs to make a base mesh to paint over when the grid fails me, but it doesn't seem to help much. My grip on values is tenuous at best some days, but that varies wildly. I've been doing this for like 5 years now, this progress is depressing.

Second pic (c/d), I can't get any of my characters to "sit" right in space, or ever actually pull together to look like a person. I've done millions of gestures and they all come out looking far better, but (and this happens for every single thing I paint) inevitably it doesn't pull together and I get discouraged and just drop it. That alone sums up the last two years. It gets to that ugly duckling stage and my interest falls off a cliff.

Help. Be as brutal as you need to be, hell let out some frustration from your commute to work, I would appreciate any form of crit or advice that would get me out of this slump.

Enviro A -- this can be fixed with some better values. Right now it looks like you took colour dodge to the lava or whatever and it's a mess. Clarify your lighting and values more and it will be a lot better. Maybe too modify some things so that the entranceway is a stronger focal point, perhaps some torches there or light coming out of a doorway or even just a couple characters standing there. At the moment my eyes keep going to that dark blob in the close lava pool on the bottom right.

Enviro B -- the scale is really weird. The house and bridge look tiny because of how small they are compared to the close tree as well as the distant trees and buildings. The vanishing points are a bit close together for it too. Also you have the same issue with your lighting/values not being great. Grab some ref and fix it.

Character C -- It sits in space fine I think. If you are worried you can define the ground plane. His proportions are a bit off (short arm for example). His design is pretty bad too. Like you just slapped random shapes on him and gave him a hood. Figure out what the design actually is and what the forms of his clothing or armor is and why. And then light it. You have zero lighting there.

Character D -- This one is reading very flat. Try to bring out the fullness of the forms better. Careful again of proportions as it is slightly off. You've placed the horizon very low on this one so we should see slightly the bottom plane of things like underneath the chin a bit and stuff. It look like you don't know much about armor, so get some ref and see what the pieces are and how they fit over a human body.
>>
>>2538439
Proportions are really unappealing, and yes, I get that it's intentional, but it's not working.

The design feels a bit like separate things thrown together. You can try to unify things a bit more by repeating shapes or colours or something. It feels very disjointed. It also doesn't make a lot of sense, like what are the candy cane towels wrapped around him? Why does he have a two handed sword when he needs one hand on a crutch? Why is his head so armored but his legs and arm aren't? Why is one arm protected with leather while the rest of his armor is metal? Why is his helmet so tall? Did you think about him as a character or did you just throw random things together? Who is he?

i was kinda thinking of him as a once great warrior who lost his ability to fight. hanging on to the one thing he was good at. having lost one leg though he had to get rid of most of his armor to move about. he roams the streets begging, refusing to sell what's left of his equipment and desperately trying to get employed by whoever will have him. the "candy cane towels" are thick strips of cloth intertwined, which actually are a real thing that helps absorb blows.

Eyes are asymmetrical compared to the eyebrows. Looks like you applied perspective to the brows but not the eyes. They're also pointing in different directions like you'll cowards dont even smoke crack.
Neck is too thick as well imo, i mean people like that do exist but it is a bit jarring.

Your linework is super scribbly. Try getting some longer lines in there. Like the stomach/chest area can be one lin curved line for the entire thing instead of 30 small scribbles. The same applies for any section of it.
>>
>>2538905
train drawing forms, simple geometric forms. do it on a daily basis. study anatomy, do a lot of gesture drawings.
do 30 sec. sketches for next couple of weeks. it will force you to look out for the overall shape. avoid details

reference.sketchdaily.net/en/

get a simple and cheap sketchbook, go sit in a park or a coffee house and draw people. this will get you quickest to a solid state.
from there start learning anatomy, perspective and try to visit a figure drawing class every now and then.
also, don't avoid perspective, even if you only want to draw creatures, you need a basic understanding of perspective, because it's 3dimensional

good luck

very bizarre composition, focal point isn't entirely clear. the black figures in the background compete heavily with the foreground figures. a good way to make a focal point stand out is for it to have the widest value range, while the stuff in the back would have the lowest (sort of greyed out, value-wise). right now everything is sort of the same. interesting concepts, though, definitely makes me want to know more.

>>2538448
this is nice, i would focus more on your design shapes and silhouette. you've got a lot going on with the blood, the folds of the clothing and the little details on the bags, try to be more conscious with the lines you're putting down. do you really need the folds on his bent arm to be so well defined? what are all the wrinkles on their hands and gloves adding to the illustration?

also consider their designs and what they tell us about the characters. the well trained old man vs. the young inexperienced dude is obvious, but what else? the sheaths of their swords are the same, is this important? are they from the same clan? they both have a lot of bags, are they competing traders? you can make things look cool, so now make design decisions that help sell the characters a bit.

it's better, though i'm not too sure about the coloured outlines on the two characters. i would also keep the silhouette dude in the foreground the darker black from before, because now it's like a weird "is he part of the midground or the foreground" kind of deal. definitely reads a lot better, though.

as another note, i like how you handle overlapping characters with the thick negative space between them, but i don't think it's completely necessary for most of the background characters. it just creates too many interesting negative shapes in places where we shouldn't be looking; we can still tell what they are when they're one amorphous blob, so separating them is just distracting.

That is not how faces work. Feet are not solid form and don't follow perspective. Don't get lazy with how the hand is holding the knife. That is not how tails work. You need a higher value range for the characters. I like the Cheshire cat's expressiveness but Alice's pose is really wooden.

I like the composition. The idea here is potentially cool but also potentially tryhard/corny depending on how well you do it.

I'd say make the background more interesting - I suggest to make the red stuff blend into an abstract blend of hearts/diamonds cards fanning out, but its up to you what you end up doing. Just make it more than blank whitespace.

Reference Reference Reference!

don't rely on filters to feign interest.
It looks fine, you fixed the eyes on the finished one but they still seem a tad large even on that.
Her right eye is also a bit higher than her left one.
Experiment with different methods on doing hair because it looks pretty muddy on this; near the scalp its fine, but as it flows down it loses form and blurs into a mess. I'd go back in with a hard round brush and rework it; avoid having your values all muddied up.
There also doesnt seem to be enough definition on the facial planes, making her face feel a bit flat.
>>

>>

Just fooling around with colours and applying that thing where the forehead should be yellowish, the cheek area should be reddish and the jaw more blue. Making skin more transparent than real life and understanding what undertone is below makes it look more alive and "neon". I also i try to emulate a lot ruanjias colours and krenz and use references to see how they do it.
>>

One thing apart from what has already been mentioned: Her chest needs to have better defined forms (more form shadows specifically). It looks flat as a cut-out right now.

Finally I'd just like to say that I've always admired your visual imagination. It's always very ambitious, and I like that!
>>
>>2539440

This more or less >>2539445

There are a few problems with her facial features that make her look kinda ugly, and a little retarded.
The most blatant mistake is that she is crosseyed as you noticed.
Bring the iris in the left eye more to the middle, make it wider. Maybe the right eyebrow needs to be higher. Her smile is kinda weird, maybe her gums are too low, but I think once you fix the eyes, her smile seems fine, it's just the bizarre combo of ugly eyes+crooked mouth that are the problem. Besides that, her jaw may be too long and angular, and that's it.
I tried tweaking it a bit on the other reply, but looks like I also failed, so nothing can I do besides wishing you good luck.

I don't have much to work on but to me, it feels like the branching on the right weights so much that the tree would fall on its side. The entirety of the rightmost branch is too thick, basically.
Your foreground trunk is also smaller than the back one, while a realistic scenario, I just think it doesn't work well as a painting to show scale and depth.

cool, a few observations as a random viewer of things that popped out after looking at it for more than 5 seconds (not critique from an expert):
>the right edge of the sphere which looks to be the focus looks too flat. i think it's a mix of wonky shape and lack of a few more values giving it a spherical form
>the leg of the man on the right is cartoonish and silly, the knee looks dislodged. did you use a warping tool?
>that wiggly line below the (04) that shows wear, it looks too rushed. the idea is obviously right but if you just spent 3 more seconds to make it look less like a human doodle it'd be that much effective, it just popped out to me as someone went and vandalized the machinery instead
>is the background photobashed? especially the part in the middle looks completely copy-pasted, of place and completely different than the things in the front
>maybe show a tiny bit more of that cyan light on the 2 hazard guys, it seems weaker than everything else on their equipment

thx, yeah I actually did think about it, I usually don't add interactions with these designs but since I really wanted to show how massive this guy was I added that random knight having a hot summer day. And due to the nature of the pose he would probably be in the middle of a flaming battlefield and wrecking havoc.

thing is I added too much pencil details and i'm too lazy to redo them in color, so if I decided to do one it'll also be in pencil.

You have a nice color range, which holds up both in the thumbnail and in full view.

Your biggest flaws are edge control and construction. Too many features look like they're just "floating" or sitting there, I'm assuming because they lack the proper construction which situates them on the face (for example, I'm having trouble really seeing the front/side planes of the face, the barrel of the mouth, the ridge of the brow and the shape of the eye sockets + eyes.

The other thing is edge control, some of the edges lack hardness, specifically when a shape "ends" (think the jawline, side of the nose and nostrils, folds of the ear, certain parts of the mouth, and the cigarette). That's something you can fix by simply using a round hard brush, then blending out the part which you don't want to be hard.

Not gonna bitch you out on the effects, who gives a shit. Flaws will be visible with or without and you did come here for a crit.
>>
>>2540037
Forgot to add, but you really managed to nail the range of lights in your scene, as well as skin translucency/SS without going overboard. Stuff like the little overblown highlights on the cigarette and side of the nose really help give the piece a cinematic feel, and would stand out so much more with proper edge control (so that you can have a hard edge, then a soft contrast on the parts where the highlights are most intense)

Well, it's not bad to be honest, your details are nicely painted and it kinda shows that you've got experience doing something else if not landscapes.

The skills you wanna work on to improve your landscapes are primarily related to "composition". One aspect that your painting is lacking is good shapes - if you try to understand the major forms and lines in your drawing, you'll see they're super disorganized and uneven without really leading to anything. Ideally, you want them to lead towards your focus (I tried to illustrate that a bit in this pic).

Other aspects you want to research are contrasts, namely saturation contrasts, and I think you can also expand your value contrasts even more if you'd like.

Detail contrasts are another thing which helps with composition in environments: the fact that your focus is the thing that your focus is the element of the painting which has the least details is a problem. If these are meant to be big, simple shapes, spend more time rendering them to make them catch the light really nicely, or maybe give them a texture, or some additional elements around them (which you've kinda started doing with the jellyfishes), but I'd add even more details around these cubes somehow. Detail also tends to go "more at the front > less at the back", which means your hedge row and trees lack detail compared to your mountains.
>>
>>2540061
That's because I'm actually not serious. I don't have enough time/dedication to actually learn past that. I just draw for fun now.
>>
>>2540382

Sky and background mountains look okay.

I remember learning in class once that with natural light the foremost ground should be darkest.

Then lighter as you recede towards the background.

I don't think its a hard and fast rule, but some professor told me that once. Take it with a grain of salt.

Do some old master studies maybe?

Or someone like caspar david friedrich?

That's my two cents.

Could she pass for a non-retard now? I mean, I don't think the guise could hold up under scrutany but at least she'd be able to walk through a crowd without arousing suspicion of her retardation right?

Also shat do y'all think of the guy? He's supposed to be coming up to her while sheilding his head from all the moths and shit that are pestering him and he was sort of reaching out like he's gonna grab her. But he seems a bit too far away, and I don't want to make him bigger because he would compete with her as the focus too much. Maybe he could be pushing those branches out of the way with his outstretched hand or something else? Or is it ok as is?
>>

I'm not sure the composition works any better, but your contrasts definitely did improve. (Your blocks are too far to the right of the image, without any other forms holding them down or bordering them).

One other thing I'd like to bring up here is the depth in your grass. You have a plane that essentially runs from the foreground to the midground (it lines up with the cubes at some point), but that plane looks really flat. There's a few problems I can name for this:

-Your value range remains the same throughout the whole plane, while values should have the most variation near the camera, and less and less as they get farther.

-Your details are all the same. Besides the small group of rocks left of the trees, all of your rocks are roughly the same size. If the group of rocks placed under the trees is composed of rocks the same size as the biggest rocks of the foreground, you'd expect smaller rocks to be there as well, so the viewer can make a size association. Instead, because there's just big rocks once you reach the mid-ground, the viewer is tempted to compare them to the smaller rocks of the foreground, and ends up thinking that these rocks aren't too far away from the others.

-Same for the flowers. Besides the fact that the farthest patches cover half the area of the closest ones (which is at least a start), they're essentially the same, stroke size and everything. Blue isn't a color that gets lost with distance (so you wouldn't lose much saturation if they were further away), but you could still play the distance difference by making the foreground flowers a lot bigger, and even giving them definition if you like (make a patch of a few right next to the camera with little petals and everything, and then the tiny dots in your midground will actually look... tiny).

Don't be afraid to look at reference. If you feel off about using them for imagination paintings, use them for studies.

She's still terribly cross-eyed, like "staring at her nose" cross-eyed. Her expression is super tense, corner of the mouth and shape of the eyes/cheeks hinting that she's like, bulging her cheeks upwards. It's some seriously nice illustration otherwise, so I hope you manage to fix it lol.

Also her left shin looks like it's got a very flat area, considering how nicely everything else is rendered this probably shouldn't happen.

If the guy's shirt is soaked it won't reflect light this much. Wet fabric tends to have a higher specular, but I don't think it reflects bounce light nearly this much (the hanging sleeve under the cape). There wouldn't be much bounce light anyway since it's raining.

The guy looks cool, I didn't really think he was abnormally far away to make that gesture.

>>2540470
The toothy smile and crossed eyes makes her look a little goofy.

Got sick of watching drawing tuts and reading books, decided to set out on my first big drawing project. So heres a rough underlying structre that I've come up with.
Still need to add more shadows and adjust the bottom character, but does anyone have any suggestions for the overall composition or background?

Need some help with this one, I know the values aren't right but I cannot wrap my head around where to fix it. Anybody?
>>
>>2540703

First step is to get rid of the jarring scratchy black lines. They make it difficult to see the values correctly and just look disgusting overall, kind of like the pubic hairs I fish out of my shower well. Either erase them or color them to match the clouds.
>>
>>2540703
>>2540710

I also recommend some subtle hints and highlights of yellow and orange considering it's daytime and the sun reflects off of the water and clouds. And I agree. Lose the lines, create slightly stronger shadows to make shapes, but great concept overall.
a personal thought would be adding a small person looking up from the rock to create a sense of scale.

Looks nice. I like the general shapes and composition. Would be nice if you had done it at a larger scale and gotten some more variety in your brushwork though. It's all very same-y, would look good with some more edgework and variety of marks.

Thanks, you're mostly right on every aspect.

Scale was bit narrow (50cm vertical) and not big fan of working with tiny brushes, yet. Also tried to narrow down focus with details, but there is clearly more space for diversity.

After that my focus has been on brushwork, to bring more clear indication of shape with less effort. I found out that painting requires quite a lot of confidence.

Pic related, old sketch.

That's cool, dude.
I think there's a vague assumption that everyone posting here wants to improve. I'd recommend varying the line quality and range of value. I think the weight could give your stuff some more impact without really having to work for it.

As I said I had some doubt about the porportions and the head, I would like to have some critics on what is to fix.
I'm not used on drawing females figures and I'm using a photo as a reference

>>2540786
That's neat, I really like it, my only complain would be that I think the view is to narrow.

>>2540783
>>2540780
Great job, i love the colors and your brushes marks, do you use references and existing pictures or do you create those landscapes with your imagination ?

>>2540673
I would make the sky more visible and distinctive. I think the character at the bottom is a bit off, maybe his placement or maybe he's too small I would say
>>
Some head practice from this morning, I'm starting to improve on my sketching, feels good man.

Next goal is to start actually painting shit with values and actually get out of my comfort zone.

I don't really count, but my guess would be 5-7 but I'm pushing for more (12-16 hours a day (weekends off) as I'm going to uni and the course is mostly self learning, rent/course is cheap so no need for a job just three years of nothing else but drawin.

I'm being careful and going up slowly as not to burn out, I know you won't be interested in this but I get excited, then I wanna tell people my plans.

>Monday to Friday - push for 10 hours in my first 3 months, work my way up from there
>Saturday is a trip out somewhere interesting, I'll be taking a camera and just photo collecting for references and enjoying the place at the same time
>Sunday rest and vidya with my chick

It's gonna be fun.

From the start, it’s cool to see someone posting traditional painting. With that said I would first do what I’m doing, work on fundamentals get you’re sketching down to a level you think is good, and then explore painting. Before you go into a painting, get your sketchpad draw a whole bunch of versions of what you’re going to paint it. I’m not gonna lie I’m not really a fan of the style, though lack of fundamentals may be adding to that, try a whole bunch of experiments with a couple small cheap canvases, try different ways of painting something see which one worked best that keep going with it and improving upon it.
