I say this all the time. The point of the exercise is not completely about getting it right, it's about feeling how it is to draw what you see (as opposed to what you know. You don't have any visual cues in this exercise because you haven't drawn someone upside down).

Alright so I visited draw a box and practiced drawing some basic shapes. I decided to apply some of it and attempt to draw a hand with only cylinders

I have no idea what shape to use for the back of the hand, I haven't started any anatomy as well?

Last question is this the basic idea behind simple shapes? Instead of drawing complitcated things you draw a box which is easy to manipulate then you go back and add details?

Your ellipses are too pointed, try your hand just banging out a few ellipses.

Did you draw the cylinder lines first before the ending ellipse?
>>
>>2474986
Yes, also the back of a hand is a spatula. You don't have to use perfect geometric shapes when breaking things down.
>>
>>2474693
I worked on a few of the criticisms from last time and I think I did a little better. I need to minimise my crosshatching and work on varying my lineweight more, both in contour and in hatching.

Thanks for your earlier critiques - any more would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty good at doing boxes in perspective but I can't figure out how to simplify the ribcage and pelvis as boxes. Like I have no fucking idea where to put the corners and edges. I undestand that I'm supposed to start with the 10th ribs and vagina bones respectively, but then I just stall.
I tried drawing boxes on top of reference photos and I failed even at that. What the fuck.

This is the first time i've drawn a face. I used a picture of myself as a reference. I had trouble trying to figure out which areas to shade. And I can't get the eyes quite right.

I'm most proud of the hair. I've never been able to draw hair, and this came out way better than I expected.
>>

>>
>>2475104

>>2475105
Thanks, i'll make sure to pay attention to that in the future. Sometimes I can tell something isn't right, but I can't figure out what's wrong. It helps to know some common mistakes to watch out for.
>>
>>2475092
For a first time it's not that bad, though like the other anons ( >>2475104 and >>2475105 )
have said, there are issues with the lighting and with symbol drawing. Lighting is easy to fix, while symbol drawing is a little more tricky. Moving forward, you'd be best served by working on your construction and your conception of a head as a three-dimensional form that you're putting onto a two-dimensional plane. I think that's most likely what you mean when you say you can tell something's not right - you've got marks on the page that represent eyes, but they're not a depiction of how eyes actually look. To do that, you need to go back to construction: eyes are ball-shapes inside the orbit of the skull, overlaid by the flesh of the eyelids as well as pads of fat around the eyes, and the bony ridge of the eyebrow. I'm not getting any of that from the shapes you've drawn.

Some good books about the subject include Loomis' "Figure Drawing for All It's Worth," Guptill's "Pencil Drawing Step By Step," And Hampton's "Figure Drawing, Design and Invention." They do a really good job of explaining how to represent three-dimensional forms on paper, and they have a wealth of other information as well.

Personally, I think you should work on your proportions a little more. You'll get there in time - work hard!

You need to go back to construction, features should not be "drawn" on top, they're also constructed in a way, you're just guessing there. If you can costruct a skull then I don't see how it is that different from constructing a face, given that the face require simpler forms

Now this is how hampton construct a face. Look at how simple he starts, just a ball and a "box" for the jaw, then he goes and start sculpting the major planes.

For the beggining you should stick to the ball and box, draw it in different angles, don't put features or any innecesary bs, then when you have it down, then move to the next step.

Features could be complicated if you don't have a grasp of proportions first, stop rushing

Your contour work and the level of skill in your rendering is really, really impressive. The only thing is that the shadows around the angle of her jaw and her chin aren't as deep as in the reference image. The shadows around the deltoid, the clavicles and the trapezius also look a little poorly-considered. This best example of this is the area of shadow over the far nostril as it transitions into the cheek - in the reference image it's clearly delineated with a wedge of shadow but in your study it's related by a set of contour-defining lines.

Aside from that, good work overall. Do you have a portfolio of work online? I'd love to see more of what you do!

Just keep at it till you can manage to draw a good face at any angle without looking at a picture the entire time you're drawing.
>>
>>2476315

But there are obviously some big flaws in these, I need some direction. Isn`t there anything you can say like ``ànon x is wrong, so do y until x is better``, even if its a small element, and not an overall thing. I always feel so lost trying to learn something without a direct instructor.

>>
>>2476329
No theres not really any flaws because there is literally nothing here, you have to actually add features to the face to have any tangible flaws, all you are doing is drawing chins, you need to put more shapes and features on them to actually start to understand anything.
>>
>>2476329
Here's what you do.
Draw from reference. Then put the heads over the reference. Instant critique.
You might want to be more proactive in thinking about how you can learn most efficiently. Ironically, just like totally drawing 500 loomis heads is lazy practice.
While we're talking about efficiency, don't number the heads. At two secons per number you're gonna waste 1000 seconds. That's a lot of seconds.

While I'm not sure what exactly you mean when you say "I was told to do that", you now presumably have two opposing arguments for wether you should do it. Consider them and figure out what is best for you.

Okay, it's good to memorize the basic head abstraction. You can keep doing them here and there, try to keep them nice and accurate, there really isn't much to say.

You can try applying the abstraction to faces if you want to go straight into drawing people, that's where you're going to fuck up really bad and we can point you in the right direction from there.

You can also practice by drawing asaro heads and skulls, which is the natural progression after learning the basic head abstraction.

Keep doing the Loomis heads, try some real face pictures, try some skulls, try some asaro heads.
>>
>>2476440

You have to feel the form. Everything you draw has a three-dimensional form, and the key to drawing is conveying that form on the page. You construct by drawing through the form, you render by showing the changes in light as it moves across and around the form. It's all about form.

ok this is the first value study I've done other than a cube (I've been drawing for a month). not really sure what I'm doing

I'm pretty sure I fucked the left eye and nostrils and was supposed to block in the highlights instead of just throwing paint everywhere.
>>
>>2476469
I might be wrong here, but I don't think jumping from a cube to a face is the way to go.
Not only are the values all over the place, the structure is not correct either.
If you want to practice values and you're not familiar with drawing a human head, I'd suggest doing some other type of value study. Inanimate objects would be a better choice, fruits/plants if you want soft/round shapes, manufactured objects if you want hard corners/flat surfaces.

Spend a lot longer measuring during your lay-in. Control your strokes, try not to make so much of a mess. Paint opaque and use a more simple palette. Don't outline the lips. Break the hair down into large shapes, the messy random strokes don't do anything good for you.
>>
>>2475231
i like them. You got to work on facial hair and fix your shading, it varies too much (you use a lot of different methods).
The middle one in the bottom row is great, try to get the other ones to that level.

>>
>>2476009
You can use your pencil to get the angle of an object better when you turn your pencil in your hand and then place it on what you are working on to see what angle it goes.

It is hard to get everything else lined up when the body itself isn't at the correct angle.
>>
>>2476605
I believe it's the subject. Anyway you should practice more on the gesture i guess, i mean your drawing is too stiff.
>>
>>2476631
I'm using a tablet sweetie, but I get what you're saying. Unless I use my pen to the screen.
>>2476633
That's fair, I got you.
>>
Can someone explain this to me? The angle is completely fucking different. Is this supposed to be "gestural exaggeration"? Am I supposed to be doing this when practicing?
>>
>>2476679
the outline matches but the imaginary boxes inside are complete ass and make it look like she's flexing backward instead of sideways
>>
>>2476679
I highly suggest reading Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton (check the Art Book thread) for better understanding. The drawing on the right is just a quick construction of two of the major masses of the human figure: the rib cage and the pelvis.

Also, as you can see from this overlap that I've done, the angle is just fine, but it might look that way to you because of how much larger it is, and also because the bottom of the top box and the top of the bottom box make it look like she's bending backwards.

Also, yes, you should definitely use basic construction when starting a drawing.

ugh need to practice not chicken scratching when I draw
>>
>>2475461
Can anyone answer my question?
>>
>>2475461
these things are what I heard from anons

-it's suggested that you be good at traditional first before going digital, because learning how to paint digitally will be easier because digital sort of emulates traditional painting.

-if you're a complete beginner, go for traditional first. Learn how to not chicken scratch, make good strokes on pencil/pen, after that you can practice digital drawing.

ctrl+paint is a great website that covers digital drawing very well, as well as touching into traditional and why it's important
>>
>>2476804
Thanks, how much of a difference is there between traditional and digital.
>>
>>2476804
also from my experience, it's better if you get into traditional first.
I was stupid to jump right into digital because my sister had an old tablet she gave me. Now I have to go backwards and learn not to draw so shitty.
my stuff >>2476796

Main reason is that undo key (ctrl z) which can hinder you a lot and make you worse mechanically (and maybe observation/skill wise)
>>
>>2476807
I think digital tries to emulate traditional drawing (mostly painting). Like tablets now a days have pressure levels and such that detect how hard you're pushing down on the tablet which can have variety of results. You can also manipulate the pressure through tablet options.
And when you open photoshop, you'll see it has so many options on brushes and shit that come from painting.

If you plan on getting a tablet, get a medium sized or big one that's decent. ~$100 don't try to be cheap and buy those "beginner" tiny tablets because it can cause carpal tunnel.

sorry, I can't really go deep into the differences of traditional and digital because I'm a beginner

What does it mean when someone says "draw with shadows?"
>>
>>2476850
As >>2476863 mentions, watch those edges. Also, the shading is kinda nonsensical. Shadows are supposed to give your shapes volume, but in this case they only make thing look even more flat, with the exception of the bowl. The banana and what I assume is the right side of the apple look extremely flat.

Considering the bowl looks ok, I have to assume that you have problems understanding shadows on irregular shapes
