It changes sometimes but lately I've been listening to Squeeze and country music and then after a while switch over to Pyrocynical on Youtube. At one point I used to listen to 50's radio dramas and a couple Russian composers
I mostly chose one album for a while and listen to it on repeat for a month or two

I think you should only listen to music during the simpler phases, when you're really just cruising along on autopilot. Construction and composition require concentration. Except maybe when you're in mood and need a distraction from your thoughts.

Yeah, I actually felt really alone in this sentiment. I've tried having music on for more serious pieces of work, and I just start to feel distracted and actually irritable, and would have to turn it off. When I'm sketching and doing random work, it's fine to have something on, but I still prefer ambient or post-rock (wordless) music. I usually just listen to whatever mess my wife is watching while I'm working, usually dramas and whatnot, and I sit with my back to the TV since our apartment is cozy and only has two rooms. It acts like white noise basically since I can't see it, and since it's not about a history/violence/war/espionage/funny I'm not particularly interested in it. Although I must listen at least unconsciously, because sometimes I'll turn around and say, "Damn, did she really just say that? Wow what a bitch, that was uncalled for," and go back to whatever I was working on. She finds it amusing to no end.
