Right now I found some audiobooks of Harry Potter read by Stephen Fry so I'm reliving my childhood with his soothing voice. The books are not written as well as I had thought when I read them as a kid but it doesn't even matter.

It changes sometimes but lately I've been listening to Squeeze and country music and then after a while switch over to Pyrocynical on Youtube. At one point I used to listen to 50's radio dramas and a couple Russian composers

I think you should only listen to music during the simpler phases, when you're really just cruising along on autopilot. Construction and composition require concentration. Except maybe when you're in mood and need a distraction from your thoughts.

The only stuff I can really work to is classical music and calmer stoner/psych rock.

Yeah, I actually felt really alone in this sentiment. I've tried having music on for more serious pieces of work, and I just start to feel distracted and actually irritable, and would have to turn it off. When I'm sketching and doing random work, it's fine to have something on, but I still prefer ambient or post-rock (wordless) music. Basics for me: Akira Yamaoka, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Slowdive, Have a Nice Life, múm, iamamiwhoami

There is a playlist that gets me through it sometimes, that's a lot of fun to listen to for when I'm not really taking things seriously: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzX4M4V36Uk&list=RDJzX4M4V36Uk
It's mostly electronic funk and hip-hop influenced tracks that are mellow, so it still has something to bob to, but it isn't too distracting. In conjunction with the music being set to anime clips it makes me think of Adult Swim, so there's a nostalgia factor.
>>
>>2431901
It's the same reasoning behind doing construction for your faces and painting in greyscale before you go into color. "I'm not smart enough to figure out value color and saturation at the same time".
There are times when you do need to focus all of your concentration on a single task, but it's not something you need to keep up all the time.
>>
>>2441674
Aaw, shit, also some other artists who I also put on for when I'm sketching, that aren't too distracting, are Aphex Twin (specifically SAW), Wisp, Autechre, Squarepusher, and my friend makes fun of me, but Tycho's album Dive has been a go-to as well. Sorry. Although I don't put music on too often I still think it's fun to see what people listen to, or what gets them in the mood for drawing.
>>
>>2441680
Also, starting to think I listen to music while I draw more often than I realize. (Because I sketch more than I complete things because I'm a failure.) I'm going to shut up now.

Literally impossible. You will always hear something, whether it is the outside world outside your room, or the hum of electricity in your walls. >white noise
You mean actual white noise or like those white noise machines that play jungle sounds and babbling brooks? Because actual white noise will drive you insane, I've found.

I usually just listen to whatever mess my wife is watching while I'm working, usually dramas and whatnot, and I sit with my back to the TV since our apartment is cozy and only has two rooms. It acts like white noise basically since I can't see it, and since it's not about a history/violence/war/espionage/funny I'm not particularly interested in it. Although I must listen at least unconsciously, because sometimes I'll turn around and say, "Damn, did she really just say that? Wow what a bitch, that was uncalled for," and go back to whatever I was working on. She finds it amusing to no end.
