How long does it generally take you guys to fill up a sketchbook?
>>2429601
prepare to receive every response ranging from 5 days to 2 years...
>>2427673
reminds me a lot of a video game called "Half-Life 2"
I adored the game's art style, were you by chance inspired by it?
life sketch
My most recent drawing.
>>2429635
the fact that you have to explain that "Half Life 2" is a video game makes me feel old.
New to drawing stuff that isn't Fuckn' anime.
Watercolour is tedious
>>2429601
I usually take around 4 months or so, but it varies. Everyone's life is pretty different, and sketchbooks come in various sizes. If you're worrying about it, don't.
>>2429740
Good gesture, looks pretty accurate too. Try cleaning up your hatching and making it fit the form.
>>2429635
I've played it before, but I've been looking at a lot of Darren Quach and Scott Robertson's stuff lately so it's more inspired by those guys.
>>2429848
>tedious
It's a sketchbook, remember to have fun.
>>2430420
Blog?
>>2430518
Edgy and flat. You have some idea of shading, but the shading of the figure as a whole is bad and the detailing on the armor doesn't help.
idk
>>2429655
looks like you're going in the right direction
Maybe related, how do you guys get such sharp and clear looking photos of your artwork? Is there any setup I should consider (lighting, camera settings, etc) before taking photos? Whenever I try they look terrible, even after messing with photoshop. Talking about camera photography here, don't know if scanning is better.
>>2430592
digging your style, got a blog?

>>2430852
Scan them.
>>2431611
Whenever I try to scan, it usually messes up some of my lighter lines, any recommendations for types of scanners, or are there settings to change the brightness of the light? It seems much better than taking photos, so I'd like to know, too.

Practicing hands. Anyone have a critique?

>>2437923
I don't understand why someone would use such a messy and inconvenient tool. A micron pen would achieve the exact same result as that metal-nibbed pen.
There is no difference in quality.
>>2437971
Personal preference. Freedom of ink choice. Nibs are flexible, so more variety in line weight.
people looks ok, keep practicing hands.

You want to go through one every couple of weeks. Masterpieces aren't needed, but it's always good to draw a lot. Even if it's just doodles.
How do you get your drawings to look like the stuff in these sketchbooks? I don't know where to put lines for anything and my drawings look like 5 year olds.
I see these drawings and see different line thickness and lines that aren't connected in some places, but I have no idea how to do any of that. Sorry for the dumb questions, I'm an uncreative person who really wants to draw.
This is the only picture I have saved on my computer that I drew in a lined notebook middle school style, and it's an anime style video game character (kill me).
>>2438894

>>2439098
practice
>>2439118
goddammit
>>2430852
don't take them using auto settings, you need to choose appropriate white balance and set iso (depending on the amount of light you have in your room, try 200-400). if your camera enables it, change diaphragm (f/5.6 should work) and exposure time (about 1/60s? maybe a bit more)
>>2439098
There is a sticky with all the information you need.
>>2439118
No tips? Just practice and my lines will stop looking dumb? Alright... I'll keep trying.
>>2439098
Well, step one would be to buy a sketchbook. It doesn't necessarily need to br expensive, but the orientation anf binding is kind of a peeve for some people.
Step two is to simply git gud; or rather, practice gettin' gud. There are a myriad of ways to achieve this, but the number 1 method is to draw something every day. More importantly, draw a /better/ looking thing every day. Ask questions and be specific, show examples, observe shit.
This is my general advice for a general question.
>>2439140
Check out the sticky, take classes, read books on the subject.
Start with simple construction (like Loomis) and basic 1&2 point perspective.
With line weight the basics are thicker/darker lines at things in the front, and thinner/lighter in the back.
The thing with lines not connecting is about trusting the brain to do it for you. This usually means you have to create an implication for where the line should be, either by using the rest of the shape, or by leaving it up to the person viewing the art to have prior knowledge about the object or shape you are drawing.
I fucking love my new gel pens:
PILOT - V5 Hi-Tecpoint 0.5mm
&
PENTEL - Hybrid Technica 0.3mm
Though I fucking hate my old Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pen (B) I used for the box behind the dude

I fucking hate shadowing in a sketchbook, shadows hides a lot of disproportion in drawing
As well as muh style and "abstract" shit
Do you guys balance multiple sketchbooks, or doy you find it better to draw in one?
Since the only sketchbooks I can find are like 12-15 pages I tend to have several, one for regular drawing/doodles and the other for life drawing.

This was the reference pic. The reason the png looks so bright is because he literally scanned it.

>>2432951
>>2439146
How are you people fooled so easily by picture quality and not drawing quality?
>>2449624
Your drawing is mediocre. It lacks imagination and it's a copy of reference pictures from another thread.
There are more creative and better looking drawings EVEN in this thread if you look closely for more than the 5 seconds of attention span you have.
>>2449625
Those are not my drawings, everyone who disagrees with you aren't samefagging anon. I think they are beautiful and well designed. Some of the best I've seen on ic in a long time.
>>2449627
I only same fagged two of those comments to point out what I was talking about. Second, these two extra posts are because you responded.
>>2444600
Here is the reference thread he was on.
You're being fooled by nice bright lines that you get from a well scanned picture. It's literally the same quality as 1/4 of the pictures you see on IC and of less imagination and perceptive quality than another 1/4.
You're being blinded by something shiny the same way teenage girls on facebook are blinded by other photo copies.
>>2449627
You and they even fell for the same passive fishing for compliments
>>2449627
>Some of the best I've seen on ic in a long time.
you should lurk more
>>2449625
I know, I was obviously using ref because I'm studying from hamptons book rn sorry for disappointing pls don't start drama
>>2449637
Someone needs to offer the critique when no on else will. Otherwise you just get the same "everyone's effort is the same!" bs you get in art school.
>>2449620
Shit, I was convinced the dude was drawing from life for some reason. Drawings are still pretty slick, even if they are flawed.
>>2449644
You must not have the spark. You're still a good fanboy and a good consumer though.
>>2449650
>the spark
Nice meme, fag. There's literally nothing wrong with liking things that look good.
>>2449655
haha I know
As for liking things that look good, do it when it's from skill and not from a good shot.
>>2449641
Simply telling someone they're "mediocre" is not critique, retard. You need to point out the flaws, but I guess you can't because you don't have the eye for it.
>>2449662
I start off with "mediocre" to capture your attention, and it worked.
As for analysis, I offered the reference pictures for you to see. And I stated the reason as to why you liked it despite the anatomical flaws and errors in copying.
The figure in >>2448644 is rigid, blocky and not very well proportioned. Notice how he left out faces and hands because he can't integrate them into the whole body yet, at his level. As for the face >>2449620 you can see what happened to the jawline of the guy when he tried to draw the beard but couldn't. The eyes are pointing in the wrong directions and the plane of the face is off. The nose is flat on one end and not the other. "Economy of lines" in this case is what he used to excuse how he didn't know where to finish. The folds of the left eyes are well done. You can tell he started there. The 2nd face, I'm not even going to comment on that.
>>2449103
Suffers from the same issues of compartmentalization. They're unfinished and not very well integrated. The planes of the body don't match up. He was lucky that his bad proportions ended up the way they did, accidentally accentuating the hips. Maybe that's the only part he's studied so far.
>>2449675
He does have "slick" looking lines and rhythms though, as you pointed out at least twice.
>>2449632
>being so buttblasted over a disagreement
I like them. I guess that must really get to you, anon? He likely draws way better than you ever will.
>>2449662
Pay attention to the joints, alignment of the spine, rib cage and muscle attachments.
>>2449682
Not really. But even if he did, that wouldn't matter, because what a speaker says and the speaker himself have no bearing on each other. A retard could say 2+2=4 and be correct. Likewise, ad hominem and appeals to authority aren't legitimate arguments for discrediting another person.
>>2449675
hi thanks for the crit
on the first figure I was more focused on drawing the 3 larger masses because I'm still having a little trouble with feeling the form and twisting and pulling things, that's why I left out hands/arms/legs/feet. these are just sketches, I was trying to do the soft/hard edge thing and left out major masses of the same value untouched intentionally (like the guys beard and hair) just added more detail in parts where there's high contrast, but I still have to practice that a lot more so I can get better lines and handle of my pen.
>>2427672
Guys, guys!
Can we please stop arguing. ;9
>>2449694
no you retard arguments are fun and serve as an extension of critique which is fundamental to the process of learning art

Quite promising (especially the page on the left) however I feel you're approaching eyes wrongly which spoils the drawings.
