He really was, but that's ok. Shame what his bf did to the work after his death

oh, didnt know that, i was talking about you

>>2398784
Great composition and use of brush strokes. I fucking love how well he painted hands.
>>
>>2398784
I like his work. The way he uses strokes of paint reminds me of Charles Dana Gibson's work, and I think it's cool.

J.C. Leyendecker exploited realism with his sheer skillfulness. The lesser known great american illustrater, and it's a damn shame. He knew his job as an illustrator, which was to find the right medium between style and realism. One of the best illustrators of all time for that. My favorite artist beside Phil Hale.

But not everyone can draw like J.C.. We need anime artists, abstract artists, etc. all so alphas like him can exist through probability.

Really shame, that Leyendeckerfag is one of biggest /ic/ shitposter.
>>

Him and Leyendecker's sister had a yard sale and sold his paintings for as little as $75.
>>
>>2399333
You say it like they were worth more...
75 / illustration is more than fair price
>>
>>2399350
75/ illustration isn't such a problem ... if the artist is alive and still going
>>
>>2399350
It's not just about the price, it's about the works just being spread around to anyone who came by. Who knows where some of those paintings are now?
>>
>>2399366
$75/illustration is an awful price for an original oil at that caliber of work. $200-350 for a living artist, depending on size and detail. Where did you learn to price work?

One of the greates Illustrators that ever lived. Achieved mastery of style and technique that I'm yet to see in another illustrator. Even Rockwell studied him and didn't ever try replicating him.

there is a complete full high res pack floating around the internet.

There is a museum in Stockton that has some 60 something original canvases. There are drawings and sketches too but you need a private viewing to see them.
>>
>>2401214
Well, that is something I'm looking for. If somobody knows where to find it, I would greatly appreciate it
>>
>>2399366
I thin, its more of the fact that they liquidated some fine assets rather haphazardly nevermind how much 75USD was in their time
>>
>>2398784
He had great design skills look at all those sexy shapes and simplifications. top notch maybe one of my top 10 favorites after sargent, sorilla, but hes up there for sure.

I just spent a few hours compiling a good chunk of his artwork together. I tried to get the highest resolutions available for most of the images. Here's a RAR with something like 160 different productions from J.C. from covers to sketches to photos of J.C.. All organized

How come when you look at Leyendecker's work up close you can see white between brushtrokes? Is it the canvas beneath showing through? Is it some kind of deliberate technique?
>>

noice, can't wait to get home and download it

Not OP but I assume it's just a way of playing with the viewers eye. You have these somewhat realistic looking figures that go in and out of looking like actual objects. But he still makes it work.

I also think he was a fan of trying to show how much you can do with how little. This technique could be apart of that mentality.
>>
>>2406964

Doing God's work, anon.

>>2406981

I never cared for that stylistic choice and I much prefer when he leaves it out. I always cringe when I see other artists try to emulate it.
With that said though, his rendering and design skills were absolutely spectacular
>>
>>2399333

Fucking why?
>>

space? they wanted more room in their house?
>>

in credits should have mention why he had money problems while he had such big clients

Yeah I also find it quite cringe worthy when others try to copy it. People like Funkeymonkey I think do it badly, but maybe someone like Moby Francke could pull it off nicely. I guess you need a certain level of mastery to be able to do crap like that.

Sometimes in his work, the crosshatching does get distracting. Although I'm glad he did it because it was a good servant to break up monotony. (pic related to that point)
>>
Why does all of his stuff look like its been starched to shit? the rigid folds on everything
>>
I fucking adore the man's work.
>>
>>2407325
Well clothing was heavily starched at the time, the collars were rigid.
>>
>>2407869
This.
It's fucking beautiful. I wish I could paint like him, so so much.
>>
>>2408046
He makes it look like only linen fabric existed at that time, which wasnt the case.
>>
>>2407325
>>2408046

It's a stylistic choice. He heavily simplifies shapes into geometric representations, it stands to reason that if he didn't simplify his folds in the same way they'd stand out in a way that likely wouldn't benefit the piece.

I recall one piece where he rendered it more in keeping with reality, on a figure, but the curved and thin graphic elements that resulted were intended to draw attention to the figure's grace.

So what media did he use to make most of this work? I can't tell if it's gouache or oil paint.

Also, pic related, does anyone know his process for the white highlights? Did he do an underpainting with white and then hatch on top of that? Or did he pick out the white highlights?
>>
>>2408797
I don't even know what guache is, and I never got the change to try out oil painting but from what I can see, some of the white are painted some are from the white paper

the white background and highlights are with paint, and the hatching was done in skin colors with gaps between brushes

It's mostly oil, but some think that he might have used s primer to paint in certain sections.

He mostly painted around highlights, some of which he would accentuate more white paint. He starts on a toned surface and paints in transparent shadows with an earth tone.

Whats with that grid he uses everywhere?
>>
>>2408904

Even if his work is skilled, you made the reach of him making actual CP. Why?
>>
>>2408908
Probably anatomy helpers? Since people tend to have a hard time drawing bigger scaled stuff.
>>
Am I the only one who thinks the art reflects the fact that the artist is gay? I don't even mean it in a bad way, but there's a strong focus on fashion, aesthetics, cleanliness and theatrical poses, with a running theme of drawing handsome men.
I just get the feeling that many of the men are drawn by someone who has a romantic or sexual interest in his subjects, in the same way pinup artists would idealize women.
>>
>>2408962

you are stating the obvious. just sayin'
>>
>>2408908
>>2408945
I wondered what those lines were as well. I don't think he needs any kind of anatomical guide, because of his experience and use of models.

My guess is that they were used for scaling purposes in reference to the Saturday Evening Post cover format.
>>
>>2408962
I don't see that at all.

For sure. I see him projecting his own relationships with Beach, Agusta and probably Frank too in some way - into his paintings.

I noticed a connection between these two images earlier and couldn't help but point it out here. The way he draws women is not nearly as sexual as his men. A lot of his women are depicted in his paintings almost like friends, which he and his sister were. He was also not interested in them sexually as we all know.

You're right, and I think people's personal lives reflect in their art more than we think.
>>
>>2408801

You can clearly see the same hatching in the whites under the skin tones as in the background.
>>
>>2408962
>fashion, aesthetics, cleanliness and theatrical poses
Stereotyping much? But yes you can definitely see the idealisation of his subject matter in the same way as a pinup artist.
>>
>>2410090
yes, but I didn't bother to tip that too
>>
>>2408797
his men are absolutely beautiful
