here is gondola ascending some massive stairs. or perhaps it's just a tiny gondola.
i was having a lot of trouble with the shadow projection so i used a 3d modeling program and modeled a simple version of the scene and used those shadows as reference.

shadow projection isn't that difficult when you think about it. it's a 2d version of a 3d shape. imagine the shadow being a 2d sheet (or the silhouette of your 3d shape) cast over and perfectly conforming to whatever the shadow is cast over.

the sheet would be skewed relative to the degree of light source too, don't forget about that. if you've seen a sheet pulled taut on one corner so stripes/patterns become skewed, you can use that as an analogy.

While it is fine to use any tool or method at your disposal to achieve a final product, when it comes to learning relying too much on these tools can inhibit your ability to produce a good final product as your abilities will subsequently be limited.
You shouldn't use tools in place of fundamentals when you are in the process of learning as you will only stunt your learning.
